Drinking Too Much To Fast?

Recommended Posts

I am exactly 2 weeks post op today. When I left the hospital they gave me instructions to sip and take about 15 minutes to drink 1 oz. That was easy when I got home because it was hard to even drink that much. However 2 weeks out I can easily drink 8-12 oz in an hour. Is this too much too soon?

I am 5 days post and i can drink 8 ounces in an hour to an hour and a half, this way I can get my64 ounces of Fluid in daily. I am still on Clear liquids, that may change when I get to full liquids on Thursday.

hey girlfriend

i don't think you can ever drink too much :)

some people have trouble drinking, getting their Water in, you are doing great!!!!

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth - ;)

don't drink toooo fast though - you have a new tummy and you should be gentle with it

good luck

ps NDN_RN congrats on getting your Water in with no prob :)

I would measure it out more like 2 oz 15 min or so, if you can stand that...and note pain and discomfort, BUT it may not develop for hours - remember these nerves are healing, so pain can register long after, or after doing something that once would not have bothered you too much, but doing too often will create soreness, or inflammation - ie pain.

Some people have more swelling than others. The more swelling you have, the less you are going to be able to take in. Count yourself lucky, but don't overdo it. Just get in what you are supposed to get in.

I had my one week post op follow up appointment this morning, and thankfully was able to be moved to "full liquids" (HELLOOO Tomato soup!....lol) Anyway, she was almost hesitant to do so though because I was only tracking that I had averaged 40 oz. of liquid a day. But I said I was having a hard time tracking, so may have gotten more then that in. I've been hesitant to drink too much too fast, out of fear of damaging things, etc. The nutritionist at the hospital told me I should be drinking about 2oz. every 15 minutes. I'm getting better now, and it's my goal to work on increasing that 40 oz. to AT LEAST 48 oz and hopefully more. So that's awesome if you're not having any problems getting in your liquids each day, it is so important to do, you'll know when you've overdone it. Its when it comes eating more "regular" foods that you have to be careful of doing damage.

Way to go everyone!! :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
