Considering banding in Tijuana

Recommended Posts

I went to Tiajuana in March for my band. I went to the Obesity Control Center with Dr. Ortiz. He was FABULOUS! As with his staff! I am a Registered Nurse here in the states and highly recommend the Obesity Control Center. I told of my wonderful stories and my best friend was banded in Tiajuana a month later. My Husband has seen the progress and heard the stories and I am escorting him to Tiajuana for his band! There is nothing wrong with Tiajuana - Rumors, Rumors, Rumors! I been there, loved it and trust my family going there. (Honestly, Dr. Ortiz and his staff are more professional than any US Dr. I been to or worked for!). AWESOME EXPERIENCE!

andreerichards; The Tijuana docs are all priced pretty close. But please do lots of research. Go ahead and contact Huacuz or Obesity Goodbye and get their prices. Ask for references and patient emails. Or go on MexicanBandsters on Yahoo Groups and read what people are saying there. Listen, I did TONS of research and I think if you want the best in TJ, go for Dr. Ortiz or Dr. Kuri. I know everyone has their favorites but based on my research I thought Ortiz was the BEST for the money!

hi. i went to dr. huacuz in Tijuana. i was very pleased with the price and the care i recieved. i know there are many docs to pic from. i have sent many of my friends to doctor huacuz and so far all are pleased with him and his staff. i have not had any complications or pain. this was the best thing i ever did for my self. just make sure you do follow the instructions the docs give you and you will be fine. the lapband is a tool and i had to learn to eat slow and not too much. i hope you have a good experience like me. i had no pain or nausea after my surgury. i was only in the OR for 40 minutes. it is a pretty quick procedure. i can reccomend doctor huacuz. i like his staff, everyone made me feel special and comfortable. i was nervous about going . but it all worked out fine. i go back for my fills and that is always fun. i actually like mexico now.

Hi, I am norrowing down on Dr.'s to choose from and almost ready to schedule my surgery. I'm getting excited, but also alittle nervous. I love to hear that this surgery has changed so many lives and waiting for mine to change as well. I'll hopefully be banded by the end of the year.

I went to Obesity Goodbye in October. When they did my fill they found erosion. Dr verboonen was called in to look at the flouroscopy and scheduled my for an egd (endoscope) which verified erosion. Flights for 2, hotel, fill, egd, meals... $1500...I go back November 11th to have my band removed. That will cost in the neighborhood of $2000, around $3000 including hotel, meals, and flights... then he wants me to come back in 5 or 6 weeks for a new band. He will discuss that cost when I'm there this time... This has suddenly gotten very expensive for me. I'm glad Dr V has taken over my care. He seems very knowledgeable and kind. I'm just not sure where the money will come from to go through with another band... not to mention christmas is in 7 weeks... Dr V seems like a good Dr, but for what it has cost me so far... I'm regretting that I didn't have it done here. Cost was the reason I went to mexico... cost wise I'm now at what the american docs charge, and I am about to be bandless, though I'll still be paying for the loan I took out to help pay for it... Just something to consider before going outside the states... remember also that after Jan 1 2007, you'll have to buy a passport to get in and out of the us borders.

I had the surgery last week with Dr Pedro Kuri and his team. The hospital was spotless and beautiful. I didn't tell anyone because of the scoffers. I talked online to a Physicialn whose insurance would pay for the banding but he chose to go to Kuri because he had done the more bandings than anyone in the U.S. I walked the halls of the hosp and walked the airport to go home 2 days after surgery. I admit I was very fatigued but not in pain. Good luck daizee:clap2:

I was banded last week by Dr. Kuri and his team. T

They emailed me all the directions and answered all my questions. They provided transportation from the San Diego airport and back and to our hotel as I stayed an extra day. Everything was upfront, costs etc. The hospital was immaculate and the staff were curteous etc. I am a week out and doing great. energy a little low but no pain. I took only one pain pill after the surgery.

I know you added all this up and it equals what you would have paid for the band had you had it done in the states, but if you had it done in the states, you would still be paying for the second surgery out of your pocket. So then your total might be $30k-$40k by the time you are done. You are still coming out ahead by going to MX.

Good luck with your new band. I hope it doesn't happen again. I truly wish you the best.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
