Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Has anyone used Dr. Kirshenbaum in CO?

Recommended Posts

I was just checking out his website and his rates are really reasonable for self-pay. I have really been concentrating on MX, b/c of the reasonable prices.

I have seen a couple of doctors on here listed for around $9,500-$10,000. I would definitely be willing to pay the extra $1,000 or so to stay in the U.S. as long as it is a good doctor.

I am going to do my research, but would love to hear personal experiences. I am going to e-mail his office today.

Thanks!!

My Husband was banded today, and I am getting banded in the morning-Everything has been great so far-We both really like and have a lot of confidence in him. He has a ton of experience and has taken a lot of time talking to both of us to make us comfortable before during and after the fact. He really believes in the surgery- he told us he set his prices as low as they are because he wanted to give patients that are self pay an option besides Mexico. I give my highest recommendations. We had originally planned to go with Dr. Felix Spiegel but were turned off because he would not talk to us on the phone beforehand. Dr. Kirshenbaum talked with us 3 or 4 times prior. Hope this helps, email me if you have any questions!

Thanks for posting.

I have a couple more questions for you. Are you local to Dr. K? I am wondering b/c I wanted to know if you are able to do the pre-op, surgery and post op back to back. Since I am not in the area, I want to have to fly out as less as possible.

I filled out a request for the office to contact me yesterday. Hopefully someone will contact me today.

Was there anything @ all that you didn't like?

I haven't been contacted back by them yet, but I am sure they will answer a lot of the questions have I have.

I would love to hear anything you think may be useful or personal experiences (good or bad).

Thanks

Hi there! I was banded by Dr K this month - on the 7th. I flew in to have the operation done with him from Texas. He is so wonderful, made me feel 100% comfortable with the whole process. I am self pay also. PM me if you have further questions, I would be happy to answer them. I was actually referred to him by DrewsLou here on LBT. She has been wonderful, helping me out and answering my dumb questions throughout the whole process. If you are reading this - THANK YOU!

I have been pleased with everything, I had my band done at 10:30 and was back at the hotel by 2:00 or so, no problems at all. I amnot local, I Did my pre op through my doc so my insurance would pay that, sent him the results, hubby had surgery tuesday, I had it today, we see Dr. K againon friday for follow up, then fly home on Sat. We have a local doctor that will do our fills. Dr. K also does fills and offers a reduced price of 15 dollars a fill if you are self pay. His bedside manner is AMAZING as well as his skill. Marilyn in his office will accomodate any questions you may have. While I was in the surgical center getting ready I met a nurse that was also one of his banding patients. They all love him there! There was nothing I did not like, I have been fully satisfied thus far. He also offers you the services of a very skilled nutritionist to help you, that is included with the price.

Thanks for posting...I am sure I will have more questions while I am deciding on a doctor. I spoke w/Marilyn yesterday and she was very nice and gave me a lot of information.

My only concern with Dr. K is that he's only done 50 lap bands so far. I know he's be doing laproscopic surgery for a lot longer though.

I am local to Dr K. In fact, I only work about 15 minutes from his office so I can run over on my lunch break for a fill!

I was concerned that he had done so few bands as well but he has been doing complicated laproscopic surgeries for years so I felt I was in good hands. Turns out I was right!

Hey Gang....I was referred to Dr. K by DrewsLou too and although I live in VA, my sister lives only 20 min. from his office, so I am scheduled to have my lapband w/him on Dec.15th (it was the soonest my sister and I could get our schedules in synch). I'm really looking forward to this and would love to hear a blow by blow from anyone who has already been banded by him on what to expect. Where does he put the port? has anyone had any troubles w/it?

Thanks...looking forward to finally being banded!!!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
