Drinking With Meals.

Recommended Posts

Hey all, look who stumbled in ...

I detail a recent experience HERE. The whole thread is a good read.

All I know is that I would bonk during my running. Some days, I could run 4 miles, other days I couldn't get past two. The difference was with the amount of food I could pack in. I am quite competetive in my races and was soooo irked that I knew I could run at a certain pace, but would fail miserably at times.

I threw caution to the wind and starting at about 36 hours pre-race, I try to carb up. I also drop my Protein consumption down to as low as possible. Basically, no Protein Shakes, no meats ... carbs. They quickly get converted and stored as glycogen. Well, it worked for me. I was able to run consistantly 5 or 6 miles, but then ...

Bonk

How am I ever going to run a half marathon?

My only other solution was to try to get in even more. So, I starting drinking with my meals 36 hours pre-race. As is detailed in the link above, I was able to increase my intake by double.

I don't recommend this for sleever unless you are doing some serious exercise to expend it. I definately can eat more when I drink with my meals.

BTW, it didn't affect my weight loss, either. With the extra exercise, my body needed the calories. As you can see in my signature, I lost until I reached my goal weight and I am now at maintenance.

I find on long bike rides that I feel better if I eat 2 fig newtons before I start and then 2 more every hour as I ride. It's enough to keep me going. Without those quickly digest able carbs I will feel shaky after 30 minutes.

On my longer runs I have energy gels or the like for the same reason.

Take a bite and put the fork down. It helps me to do something else while eating. If you're a nurse and eating at work, eat while filling out some chart or report or something. Take a bite, then write something...or type it in...not sure what you do. But then go back to the food for another bite.

If you're at home, do a crossword, type an email...anything you can do in between bites.

Great advice! I usually read vst ;) I also eat wayyyyyy less with company- I'm a talker and everyone always says I'm such a slow eater when we go out in groups!

Oh and turn the TV off- it works in the opposite way!!!

I usually eat dinner with tv, but do notice I eat way too fast ( but not too much) when doing this. And it usually leads to slimes. Probably the best thing is to force my self to eat at the table, even if by myself.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
