Has the flavor of food changed for you???

Recommended Posts

I haven't noticed a metallic taste, but what I like and don't like has definitely changed. For instance, I used to love McDonald's french fries. Not anymore. With our chew, chew, chew rule, I have found that they start to taste like a big blob of grease in my mouth, so I don't eat them anymore. There are several other foods I have decided that I don't like now that I really have to chew them and see what they really taste like too.

The metalic taste is from ketosis.

I haven't noticed any change. and actually I always read about this syndrom, but never was able to understand why? Could you please guys expalin to me why it happens?

I have noticed that my morning cup of tea doesn't taste the same any longer, it also tastes watery, even though I put two teabags in it. Also, the chicken broth that I have used to have a very strong flavor, now it just tastes really watery to me. Right now i'm only on Clear Liquids, so I haven't tasted any real food yet.

OH I'm glad you asked the question. I have noticed a big difference in the food I eat and how it tastes. Definitely get the metallic taste, but also a tasteless taste after chewing forever. I just don't like meat as much any more. Even my favorite pork chops started to taste weird.

My husband tends to cook with a lot of flavoring and spice, but I find myself adding salt and pepper to give meat some taste. I thought part of it was just getting tired of chewing and finding it not worth the effort.

Amazing how well ice cream still tastes and other empty calories. :)

Taken from Wiki -

Ketosis (IPA pronunciation: [ki'tosɪs]) is a stage in metabolism occurring when the liver has been depleted of stored glycogen and switches to a chronic fasting mode during long periods of starvation.

During the chronic stage of starvation (after glycogen has run out), fat (triglycerol) is cleaved to give 3 fatty acid chains and 1 glycerol molecule in a process called lipolysis. Most of the body is able to utilize fatty acids as an alternative source of energy in a process where fatty acid chains are cleaved to form acetyl-CoA, which can then be fed into the Krebs Cycle. During this process a high concentration of glucagon is present in the serum and this inactivates glucose kinase switching the primary energy source of most cells from using glucose to fatty acids. At the same time, new glucose is synthesized in the liver from lactic acid, glucogenic amino acids, and glycerol, in a process called gluconeogenesis. This glucose is used exclusively by cells such as neurons and red blood cells.

Ketone bodies, from the breakdown of fatty acids to acetyl groups, are also produced during this fasting state, and are burned throughout the body. During the initial stages of starvation the adult brain does not burn ketones, however the newborn brain makes immediate use of this important substrate for lipid synthesis in the brain. After about 48 hours of starvation, the adult brain starts burning ketones in order to more directly utilize the energy from the fat stores that are being depended upon, and to reserve the glucose only for its absolute needs, thus slowing the depletion of the body's Protein store in the muscles.

The brain retains a residual need for glucose, because ketones can only provide energy when used during aerobic respiration in mitochondria. In the long thin neurons, much of the metabolically active cellular membrane must derive its energy from glucose via anaerobic respiration without the assistance of mitochondria.

Ketosis, which is a physiological condition in response to chronic starvation, should not be confused with ketoacidosis, which is severe ketosis causing the pH of the blood to drop below 7.2. Ketoacidosis is a medical condition usually caused by diabetes and accompanied by dehydration, hyperglycemia, ketonuria and increased levels of glucagon. The high glucagon, low insulin serum levels signals the body to produce more glucose via gluconeogenesis, glycogenolysis and ketogenesis. High levels of glucose causes the failure of tubular reabsorption in the kidneys, causing Water to leak into the tubules in a process called osmotic diuresis, causing dehydration and further exacerbating the acidosis.

The breath of people in a ketotic state commonly contains acetone, detectable as a sweet smell that may be mistaken for ethyl alcohol.

Whether ketosis takes place can be checked by using special urine test strips such as Ketostix.

Deliberately induced ketosis through a low-carbohydrate diet has been used to treat medical conditions. The ketogenic diet is an approach to treating epilepsy, and the Atkins Nutritional Approach is marketed for treating obesity. The very low calorie, medically supervised Lighter Life diet also uses ketosis for weight loss.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I've definitely tasted the difference in my tea. Blech. I LOVE hot tea, and every day I make a cup looking forward to it, right up until I sip it and it doesn't taste right. I was just about to switch to another brand - even though I've always really liked the brand I'm using - in the hope of enjoying the taste again. *sigh*

Maybe when I get closer to my goal weight, or stop being in a constant calorie drain, my tea will taste normal to me again.

I haven't noticed a differenct in the taste of meat, but I've never been a big meat eater, I just don't like it that much.

French fries have always been gross. Don't get me wrong, I stuffed 'em in if they were fresh and hot, but cold fries, barf. Chewing the heck out of them sounds disgusting. I'm glad I haven't tried them since being banded.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
