What To Expext From The Nutrution Meetting

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I'm new and working my way through this process, I found reading the forum very very helpful however I had some questions about the nut reviewand havent seen too many comments about it. I have Anthum Blue Cross.

1) what happens in these meetings, do they try to help you eat heathy so you don't need surgery?

2) what kind of approval is needed for the insurance company?

3.) have they ever stopped someone from getting surgery?

4.) how many meetings did you have before they signed off on the surgery?

5.) what should I expext from the meeting?

I just took the Pys review and have the sign off from my shrink just stressing about the Nut review.

Thanks in advance for sharing you experiences.

I have bcbs and my ins guru said I only need 1 to get approved. After I'm approved my doctor requires 4 before surgery. My insurance nut visit is next Tuesday then they will submit to insurance....good luck!

My visit lasted two hours and consisted of her asking what about all the foods I eat/don't eat and what can I do to change habits after surgery. She went through a list of foods/vitamins/protein shakes that she sells, trying to get me to purchase them from her. It felt more like a sales pitch rather than a real nutrition consultation. I did learn a lot but I could've benefited more by going through a meal plan and what I should do before/after surgery rather than why her products are better than the rest.

My surgeon required four group sessions with his nutritionist: three before surgery and one after. The meetings were extremely helpful, covering nutrition, supplements and eating habits during the pre-op diet, the post-op diet, the mushie stage and the rest of my life. She did not try to help me lose weight so that I did not need the surgery. We are all at this point because we have tried dieting, lost weight and gained it back again. The purpose was to get me ready for the surgery and the life I would have afterwards.

My insurance required me to meet with her for 6 months. I thought it would take forever but it flew by! She helped me start some new habits and I feel it was very helpful!

We talked about chewing food to applesauce consistancy, Portion Control, smaller utensils, exercise, only drinking Snacks and eating meals etc... We would set goals each month.

Good luck

you need to call your insurance and ask what their requirements are to cover bariatric surgery. then go to all the appointments, after that your surgeons office will submit a packet to your insurance. then they will call you and let you know if you've been approved, then you get your surgery date!

every insurance company and surgeons office is different. my insurance requires pcp referral, 6 months with the dietician, psych, cardio and pulmonary clearance. two support group meetings and blood work :) hope this helps.

honestly my dietician is amazing and very helpful and i didnt feel she was trying to stop me from having surgery, they need to know that your serious and ready 2 make the lifestyle change. you have to be honest and write down everything you eat! (some people use apps which might be easier) but if you are confused the surgeons office is always there to help.

i call mine at least once a week with questions and im sure i annoy them but that ok :)

Thank ALL so much for your comments. You have really helped me put my mind at ease. Apparently my ins/Dr only requires 1 vist to the Nut. My first call the only appt avialible was Sept 25th! Almost a month out. Called the second person on the list who doesn't work with my ins co and they got me on this Wednesday! $95 out of pocket but I willing to pay the money not to have to wait a month. I worked with a nut (doesnt support WLS) before and my eating habits have improved dramatically over the last 10 years, I've no problem maintaining and just can't seem to lose so here I am with sleave. Thanks agian to everyone.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
