It depends the food, the amount of chewing and the "water waiting."

Can you give examples and how much you know already.

You still probably have swelling. Over time this should improve. Go slow.

Maybe you should stick with liquids for a fee more days then try again. The painful swallowing is normal for a while but if your in a lot of pain and vomiting too maybe your stomach needs some more rest before you go with solids.

Today is my first day of mushy food (day15) and it's not going down well at all...I can see it's going to take time to adjust to the next stage

yes I felt like I had an ice cube or something stuck all the time it did go away around week 5 post op. I think it was just swelling. It would help me if i had as hot as I could stand tea in the am. It seemed to relax my whole digestive system.

Back up if you're feeling pain and discomfort. Return to the previous food stage until you do not feel pain.

In my experience, it's more "normal" (read: common) for people to still be on liquids at two weeks post op. There are exceptions but on my surgeon's post op diet I never felt pain after eating. I felt like I couldn't eat much, but there wasn't discomfort unless I ate too fast or too much.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
