Concerned About Fast Weight Loss-11 Days Post-Op

Recommended Posts

Long explanation.

I am 11 days post op. I have lost approx. 21 lbs. because I can't stand smells and tastes of almost everything. (215 down to 194)

Broths, Soups - have me leaving room gagging

Protein shakes - takes me all day to gag down one bottle of Atkins with 15 g Protein. I've tried 7 different kinds suggested by other viewers.

Protein powder - again, cant stand. tried 3 kinds. thought about trying Isopure but i don't think i can return that if i can't stomach it.

Water - couldn't stand plain water before. Always used flavorings. Now they are impossible to drink. I'm drinking plain water but it takes me all day for one 16 oz bottle, especially if i'm trying to drink a Protein Drink too.

I think alot of this is due to hormones because this is the same problem I had when pregnant with both children. sick for 6 months due to smells and taste. lost alot of weight until something clicked at 6 months (literally a size 3 at 6 months with first child and hospitalized with 2nd)

I am surviving on apple juice (ironically didn't like before), very little gatorade/vitamin water (same effect as flavored waters) and very little Jello. Tried a little scrambled egg and pureed chicken. Ok at first then, hours later, revolt.

I am very tired.

I do not want to loose weight this fast and this way.

I know I'm loosing muscle instead of just fat.

I have no energy for anything, including starting walking.

I can't take chewable Vitamins anymore either.

I am looking for suggestions.

The only plus to this is I am not hungry at all.

I just posted about being afraid of this same thing. I get nauseous very easily-- I'd rather be in pain than nauseous.

I won't even attempt to eat if I feel the slightest twinge. Can the doc give you something to take for nausea, at least in the beginning to make sure you start off healthy? I'm pre-op and already worried.

Hope you start feeling better Shape Shifter

I would call your Doc and see what he says, you need more than you are getting. Best of luck for a simple solution!

Shape_Shifter

dealing with these problems :(

being 11 days out time is on your side, you should feel better a little at a time

You are tired due to the fact that you are not eating or drinking

must get in Fluid - otherwise you will get dehydrated, you are probably there already, end up in the hospital with an IV (happened to me)

talk to your dr. about getting anti nausea, vomitting drug - Zofran for example

dr. needs to be aware your problems, maybe will have labs done

feel better soon

Just had my surgery on Monday. I have had a little nausea, but not bad enough to require meds; however, my doctor sent me home with a prescription for anti-nausea medication. You should call your doctor, they should be able to give you something. Hope you start feeling better soon.

I went to Mexico for surgery. Dr. Kelly said take Zolfran but here it's by prescription only. I'm waiting for a reply as to whether he can write scripts for the states. I really dont' want to take time to see my PCP as I'm not even sure he would write a script for this so close to surgery and he doesn't know I had surgery.

Is there any equivalent OTC meds?

There is an OTC but check with the pharmacy! Probably isn't near as good

Yes - you need to be getting in more fluids - it could explain a lot of the emotional stuff in addition to the physical. Call your doc for something for nausea so you can at least get those fluids in.

Good luck!

Zofram, anti-nausea prescription, was my Best Friend in the beginning. Maybe call your Dr. & ask for it by name. & put an ice pack on the back of your neck & chest when that horrible feeling happens. I even use a calming aroma & my temples, cuz I freak out about being sick.

Maybe try a different approach & focus on mentally centering yourself, calming down, trying to relax; deep breathing. Try not to stress so much or be so anxious. I was so intimidated & scared to eat/drink, it only made it worse. It's a life altering process, it just takes time.

Trial & error for me & trying things I didn't like before (since I didn't like the things I normally liked) worked for me. I chose banana Popsicles, creamy Tomato & creamy chicken Campbell's Soup to go, Syntrax matrix chocolate Protein, unjury vanilla & Unjury unflavored in all my Soups & purees. I put ice, Water, & chocolate Protein in blender for slushee type texture when I couldn't stomach the milk or plain Water deal. Instant mashed potatoes. & try flavoring your ice cubes by making them in trays w/mint, lemon, orange.. Instead of flavoring your water. I got bags of those great 'hospital type' ice @ Sonic to chew on.

Hope this helps. It does get better. It even took me 3 deodorants to find an aroma I could stomach, but I found 1. Don't forget to love yourself either. You deserve it :)

Thank you everyone. I have to say i don't get stressed about eating because I'm not hungry. I just know this isn't healthy.

Called my PCP and he prescribed something. I took it and made some cream of broccolli. So far so good. I managed to get all my Water and 15 g of Protein today. I also ordered a couple of unjury packets. Hopefully this combo will start working for me. :)

BTW - caught my teenager. he had been drinking and I could smell it this morning. My husband thought it was nuts but he just admitted it to me. Maybe I have a future at the airport doing security? Put them search dogs out of busines. lol

US pharmacies cannot fill prescriptions from out of the country.

oops.....sorry I did not read down far enough. Glad you got something to help. I am 6 weeks post op and have nausea everyday. I take Nexium twice a day and chew tums if I need to. Hopefully the nausea will eventually subside but it got me really depressed. I just decided that I am going to have good days and not so good days. I still don't get all my Protein in and just this week have been doing better with Water as long as it is very cold. I use the Unjury and I really like it and it doesn't make me gag. Hopefully those will work out for you as well. Hang in there and good luck.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
