Theres A Pre-Op Diet?

Recommended Posts

I didn't know there was a preop diet!? Right now I'm eating what I can keep down (lapband slipped and I have a hiatal hernia so I'm eating but only a little at each sitting......)

What's the pre op diet? I assume it's different for everyone but can I get the gist of it? Is it liquids or puréed or food?

It is different for everyone, but my pre-op diet is high Protein, low fat and low carb foods and drinks a week before surgery.

I only had about a day and a half of liquids before surgery. I had a Monday surgery so I could eat whatever until noon on Saturday and then Clear Liquids from that point until midnight Sunday. I've heard some crazy stories of doctors telling people to go 7 days on clear liquids which is downright dangerous and completely unnecessary. The point of the clear liquids is simply to clear your digestive system of all solids. It shouldn't be to starve anyone.

Some are asked to do it others not. It is a wise thing to do. It can help shrink your liver as it is not processing as much and will shrink some giving the surgeon more room to work.

One BIG benefit is that your colon will not be packed full of food post-op when you might have diarrhea or Constipation. Sitting on the john pushing or gushing is never pleasant and is twice so post-op when you're hurting and sore.

It also gives you a jump start on your weight loss - EVERYONE can keep a crash diet like this for a few weeks or so, especially when we know that surgery is coming.

I'm having surgery on Tuesday the 14th...I've struggled this week with the liquid diet!!...and cheated (no will power)....I hope this won't come back to haunt me going forward post op!!!

This diet is to shrink the liver. Cheating risks your surgery having dangerous complications, or even not being completed. Time to get serious. The post op diet is much harder, and longer time.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
