newbie wanting advice on excercise

Recommended Posts

Hey guys- just approved for surgery. I'm pretty active right now- I try do Water aerobics resistance training and walking. My fear that keeps lingering in my ear is after surgery I'll be very weak and not have the energy or desire to excerise. The little voice in my head keeps saying " you won't be eating very much and you will be tired or will get low blood sugar when exercising.

1. Help me get over these negative thoughts.

2. How do you keep hydrated during exercise? I'm use to downing 24 ozs after an exercise session.

3. Anyone take water aerobics- how long until you started back? I take deep water aerobics and have been noticing that I acidently swallow water during the class. I know that will not be good ...

Sorry for so many questions!

thanks

Michele

The first few weeks you will be weak and get tired easily, but you will work back up to anything you want to do. I recommend walking several times a day at least until your incisions have healed over. Also, your port incision will take longer to heal and may be tender for quite some time. Again, walking is a good alternative. But you will be able to get back to your Water aerobics, treadmill, even stronger workouts before you know it! Of course, as always, check with your doctor and see what they recommend. Good luck on your surgery!

Michele, unless you have low blood sugar as a medical problem (few people do, but many use it as an excuse to eat), it won't be a problem. Nor will being tired (after you're healed from the surgery). If you stay hyrdated, make good food choices with plenty of Protein, and take a Multi-Vitamin, you'll do fine. We all have calories in storage and that's what you *want* to use.

I don't have much to say that the other posters haven't said already. I just wanted to add that I, along with many others, had restrictions on going swimming for up to six weeks after their surgery. So, make sure you tell your doctor you enjoy the Water areobics and see when he feels it will be safe for you to start them again.

I could go back to swimming as soon as my incision healed, about 3 weeks. Swimming was the best exercise for me because it didn't jar my stomach. I had some port pain that kept me from jumping up and down for a while.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
