Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I am a RN and have been a nurse for 9 yrs. My nursing career began in Mother/Baby then to L&D. Moved up into management at the hospital and decided to spread my wings to being a manager at a women’s health clinic. Due to a move to Texas I am now a high risk maternity case manager….LOVE IT!!!

My surgery date is August 21st. I started my liquid pre-op diet today and I am going to bed hungry. I hope I can continue to stay positive until my surgery.

Hi! Welcome! I will be sleeved 6 days after you! I start my pre op diet on the 17th. I am in nursing school, I graduate in December. I have my Advanced Med/Surg final tomorrow..... I couldn't read one more line! It is so important to me as a nurse to be a healthy role model for my patients. I am hoping to work with kids, or mother/baby. Looking forward to watching your journey!

Good luck with your exam!! I can't imagine going through nursing school and having surgery. How much time will you be able to take off of school for the surgery and recovery?

Well, my school is funny.... I have class one time a week and lab combined so I sit in seat for around 8-10 hours (depending on the class) once a week. I had it all planned out to where I wouldn't miss any class time, and my surgeon decided to take a vacation (It is OK, well rested surgeon = safer surgery) I am actually missing one class/lab, but I went to my direct advisor and explained what I was working towards, and why. I told her I was willing to postpone the surgery (yet reluctantly) until December. She actually gave me her blessing, told me not to worry about it. I have a couple classmates who are taking notes for me the day I do miss and will have 9 days between surgery and in seat class again. I will have five weeks before a clinical rotation, my surgeon has a four week restriction. The professor directly over the class was informed and also gave me her blessing, they both said that they could tell I have done my homework and they agree that for my health it is what is in the best interest of me. I am slightly nervous about being in seat 9 days later, but half the day I will be sitting and the other half is lab, but it is never highly physical. We shall see what my complaints are in a couple weeks!

Hi everyone,

I am a Family Nurse Practitioner in WV, I worked cardiac as a RN for seven years and before that was a LPN. I was sleeved on July 17th, physically everything went fine, especially after the J P drain was removed. For the first week after surgery I was waking up with horrible night sweats and av terrible feeling of panic or anxiety. The sweats seem to be gone, thank God but I am still having some anxiety. Everything seems a little overwhelming, I'm getting my Protein in through shakes, building up my Water intake, struggling a little with food. I think it has helped me to go back to work but I know there will be crazy days there that make trying to eat and drink hard.

Hi, i'v been an RN for 8 years, I worked in ICU, telemetry, and have been doing hospice for almost 2 years. I hope to have my surgery in Jan, in Juarez, mx. my insurance does not cover WLS. I live in a small town in New Mexico a 3 hr drive from El Paso tx, I chose Dr. Jose Rodriguez. A good friend of mine had her surgery with him, she is also a nurse, she said she got better care there than in states, she drove her self to El Paso and drove her self back home. I wish I could have surgery sooner but I am out of vacation time for this year I am afraid 1 week is not enough. I do on call nights and week ends every other week, so if i take a week off i actually have 3 weeks. I am so afraid I will be one the 1% or that the surgery will not work for me, or I will feel sick from not being able to have carbs or sugar. I have had several sugeries in past and never worried. I guess it's because it is permanent. I am really glad I found this forum, I think my friend is tired of my questions. I would like to know if there are others from new mexico or others that have used this DR,, I haven't read much about him and have not found anything bad, he has years of experience and teaches Drs in states how to do procedure. I even had my cousin in Juarez check out hospital and Dr. all good reviews.

I agree. Time off is a great idea - especially in our line of work. I think I can work out about 3 weeks off of work at this point. How long are you all allowing yourself for recovery before returning to the floor? I have a few months before my paperwork should be sent through for insurance approval, so if I need to work out more time, I may be able to do so. I'm wondering if I can use short term disability benefits?? I haven't approached human resources with that question yet - I figured I would wait until I get my surgery date first.

Hello, fellow nurses! I am happy to report that I had surgery on the 13th and I'm doing great :) I also totally agree with taking as much time off as possible - I'm not going back until Sept 29th.

Hello there everybody, have been all over this web site and have read it from top to bottom. Glad to find this group. I have been an RN for 28 yrs. Wow, how time flies! I have probably done every kind of nursing out there. Hated the desk jobs, did not care for supervisory or director nursing. My favorite type of nursing has been ER and trauma surgery. Did surgery for years, have been out of it for several yrs now. (It's my love, I still dream about being in the OR. ) I wanted all kinds of experience so I jumped around enough to where now I have to focus on gathering retirement.

So,now I am working for the county, as a correctional nurse. I have always love excitement and I get plenty of it daily! I have always had problems with my weight, have been on every diet more than 4-6 times. WW probably about 10 times. Every time I lost, I swore that I would never go back......heard that before? You guys know. Long story short, getting my sleeve done Sept 10th by Dr Alvarez in Mexico. Super excited but I am only going to be able to take off 2 weeks from work. I will get to do the desk work when I get back, for a while and my co workers will pull my slack if needed. I am going to Mexico by myself,

I am not all about an audience. Even gave my sister the wrong date.

I would like to know energy levels of others at 2 weeks out. Nausea is also a concern. And I need to learn how to sip, sip, sip......Thank you all for the devotion and knowledge you'll share, it's reassuring!

Hi, I'm Amy, I've been a Psych Nurse for 38 years. I too spent several years working in Corrections. That was a fun job, but I hated the 12 hour shifts. I had surgery 15 days ago with Dr. Alvarez. I'm going back to work on Monday. Michelle.... you're gonna be in great hands. Call Susan and find out who your "sleeve sister" is going to be. I hooked up with both my "sisters" on line and on the phone. When I got to San Antonio it was like meeting old friends again. We went through everything together and have become great friends. We spent 2 hours on the phone last night on a 3 way call. I'm in Orlando, Linda is in Kentucky, and Nancy is in California. It was a great experience. Dr. Alvarez and his staff are amazing. You couldn't be in better hands. The three of us traveled alone... but we were together through the whole process. My Boyfriend wanted to come with me, and I'm glad I told him to stay home.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
