Question About Drinking And Eating

Recommended Posts

Drinking too soon before eating dilutes digestive enzymes that are in our stomach, it can lead to Indigestion, nutrition issues ect . For me 15 min is enough. I try to wait 45min after (my doc is conservative too!) gives my stomach work on the food and not wash it out !

It amazes me how different doctors are! But I definitely do agree with the not during eating (and mine says to take 30 minutes to eat; sometimes I am full and stop at 20 and other times, if I am eating very slow, I eat all the way until the 30 minutes are finished), and I definitely do not drink 30 minutes after. And let's be honest, I usually do not drink 30 minutes before. Only once I have drank up until I was eating, but that was because I didn't expect to eat anything at all.

I'm with the 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after crowd.

My suggestion....do whatever your doctor instructed you to do. His opinion should be the one that matters to you. :)

I'm not allowed to eat 30 min prior during and 30 min after. Occasionally depending on what I eat of my mouth is dry I will take a tiny sip to coat it. Its very hard to get use to i'm 5 Weeks out and I still struggle. I recommend following docs orders cuz he knows your sleeve better than anyone..hang in there it gets easy and will eventually become habit for you..good luck :)

30 before and 30 after. Often I have to sip some Water or I get the hiccups.

But a doctor friend also pointed out that in addition to pushing the food out too quickly it can also take up space that you need for food. There is no spare room in the stomach for liquid that is not providing nutrients. Food compresses when chewed - liquid does not, it takes up 100% of its volume.

You know, that was the reason why I thought we were not to drink 30 minutes prior, because you don't have that much stomach and liquid takes up room. That's why I was surprised when my friend said his doctor said you could drink prior to eating.

My Doc said 15-20 min's after, but it's usually longer before I even need a drink.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
