Ok, a week and a half since surgery with Dr Lopez, about to try to some pureed foods..25lbs down since pre op diet. 13 lbs lost since we got home last sunday night.

Today I had a small piece of chicken, 2 bites of salad and 1 small stuffed tortellini. Yesterday I had some chili from Chili's.

I am taking it slow. We have been able to eat thicker Soups, etc, but not even gonna think about solid food for at least a week. Please be careful.

I have ave a ton of logistics questions about next week that I didn't think of before. I am having surgery Oct 9th in TJ with Dr Lopez. I know I check in to the hotel on the 1st nite but where is my belongings stored when I am in the hospital? I am assuming they check us out of the hotel while we are in the hospital and then recheck back in afterwards.

What happens to my belongings when I am in the hospital? Is there a safe at the hotel I can use for my passport and cash? Also how much cash should I bring? Should it be in Mexican currency or American?

I have 2 small roller bags that I was going to bring. Mainly because unfortunately for work I might have to bring my laptop (I am hoping I don't which would leave me only with 1 bag).

If anyone can help soothe my mind that would be great. I am needless to say slightly anxious:)

You will check-out of the hotel and take your belongings with you. There was a safe in my hospital room. If you are going by yourself, I would suggest locks for your luggage. Remember whatever you take with you, you have to take home, so pack light!! I took $250 and ended up getting another $200 from the ATM, but I also did some shopping and came back with a lot of money left over. I didn't exchange for pecos, they take the US dollar. I hope I answered all your questions. Feel free to ask anything else. There is no stupid question when you are doing something you've never done before.

Thanks for the intel. The locks are a good idea. I travel a lot for my job and have to been to South Korea, Japan, Jordan and The Philippines. One thing they always hammer into us to not lose sight of your passport. It is such an odd thing going into this knowing I am going to be put under and my passport and credit card will be just lying around. I don't even leave my purse at a restaurant table unattended. This whole process is requiring a great deal in trust in total strangers. Maybe it's the nature of my job but it is hard for me to just trust anyone that much. I just want to get this over.

Why did you need so much cash? I have been to TJ before so I don't plan on doing anything but surgery. I know there are tips involved (to whom I am am still unclear) but $250 seems a lot in gratuities. My surgery price was with the hotel so I figured I'd have to tip the driver, coordinator and hotel staff. Am I missing anyone?

I also wont be taking much cash at all. I wonder if the hotel has a safe we can lock up our passport, credit card and cash in ? I will ask my coordinator.

Why are there so many parioid people on here. Stop being so scared. Take your passport with you to the hospital. Dont leave it in the hotel as you will check out the morning of the surgery and then check back in when the hosptial releases you. You dont have to tip anyone you dont want to. Standard practice at any hotel is to tip the service people there. Hospitals are better than the ones in this country and there is no need to be scared. If you are that scared about going to mx then you shouldnt go

Leaving a bunch of cash, credit cards and passports lying around is NEVER A GOOD IDEA in any country including this one. Doing this alone I want to take in every precatuion and have my facts aligned and be prepared for any outcome. And FYI I've been to Tijaunna before seen it's good and bad. Like most people this is my only option because I cannot afford it in the US and insurance doesn't cover. I've had a bypass that had to be reversed in the US because of shoddy Dr's work so the surgery part is the least of my concerns.

Ok then, you asked. Trust me, i worked in the medical proffesion for 15 years in the US, the quality of care is much much better in MX. The US is more dangerous and the drug violence and violence in gerneral is way overhyped in MX.

And i had it done in mx because the Bariatric Surgeons in MX are much better and better trained as well. Not because it was cheaper

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
