What's Up With Straws?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know why, exactly, they do not allow drinking from straws after surgery? Is it just a comfort thing? Or, is there a risk of the pouch stretching? I am dealing with the pre-surgery diet right now and I can't stand the smell of the Protein Shakes anymore. I don't really like sweet things. So, it's torture because there are no savery Protein shakes! The straw is the only way to get it down! Thanks in advance! :)

You gulp more air with straws, they are most harmful the first two weeks post op. if you do use them make sure to slip slow and have gas x on hand. :)

I drank with a straw from day one, they gave me straws in the hospital to use, I questioned them and they said its ok, if you get gas pains stop but I too drink more if I can use a straw.

Awesome guys! Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it. Sugery is August 10th. Pre-op Diet starts officially tomorrow, but I've been trying to get used to it by having one shake on Monday and Tuesday and then two shakes yesterday and today. I'm so ready for the rest of my life to begin.

All docs are different, but mine said no straw because of the extra air. However, I started using a straw at 8 weeks out and had no issues. My doc was fine with it. Just out of curiosity...have you tried the Premier Protein shakes? Much like you, I detested every shake I tried until I found Premier. One shake has 30 g of Protein. I drink one every morning with no problems. Good luck on your surgery.

Yes it's cause it can cause gas and that is painful!!!! Im a nurse and I even tell my c/s patients to not sip from a straw. Some people say they do fine but for me I don't want to take a chance cause gas pain can be unbearable. Good luck

I didn't use a straw until week 5. I found it was easier for me to sip through a straw and not gulp big drinks of Water. It has really helped me get my fluids in.

Straws give more air, which gives more gas. I've got enough gas to begin with! =p

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
