I love coffee. LOVE coffee. I don't drink it all day, but I do have 1-2 cups per day. Has anyone been able to drink coffee after VSG? My surgery date is 7/26. I know I will have to give it up for awhile, I am just curious about what other people have experienced.

My Dr. said I could have coffee inmediately after surgery. Before sleeved, I'd had 2-4 cups a day. Funny thing is, at two weeks out, I am still waiting "to want it". Somehow, it hasn't been appetizing to me yet. I miss the ritual, and I'm sure at some point it will come back.

And by the way, when I got sleeved I told my doctor that coffee was the ONLY thing I couldn't live without. Go figure.

I totally relate to your comment about the ritual of coffee drinking! That is so me- it's comforting and something I look forward to every day. Thanks for your response. I'm glad to know that I can drink coffee eventually. It's funny how the small things can be so important!

Same for me. I LOVED my morning cup of coffee ritual. I want to love it again, but the few times I have tried a little coffee, it has held no appeal to me. Now my ritual is my morning Protein Shake. I guess that is better for me....

I'm 6 weeks out and I had my first cup of coffee a few days ago. It gave me heart burn and didn't taste as good as it did before surgery. Just remember if you do drink coffee again after surgery, to use an artificial sweetener and go easy on the Creamers, as both sugar and creamers have a lot of carbohydrates, which are not good for you, or your new lifestyle. If you can drink your coffee black, that's even better. Also, my surgeon warned me to stay away from caffeine because the caffeine can trigger hunger.

Same for me! I don't drink a lot, and I drink it black. I can't stand the latte or the sweet coffee drinks. The only time I didn't drink coffee is when I was preggers. For some reason, it made me want to puke. My doc said I could drink coffee. I can give up anything but my cup of Joe in the morning!

I do drink lattes, but not the sugary kind, and always with skim milk. I guess I will have to see how my taste changes. I really appreciate the comments. I think I am going through the last minute inventory of everything I might miss after the surgery, and fearing that I will regret it later. Thanks so much for the feedback.

I drink coffee. I use sugar free Creamer & Splenda. I also add a scoop of Protein & kill 2 birds with one stone.

My fave is Starbucks Via Iced coffee with a scoop of Protein, Splenda & SF creamer.

I love iced coffee & it's delicious. I also have the Kuerig iced coffee cups in French vanilla. :)

I can't. I tried, first at six weeks out, then eight, then ten, etc. My new stomach just won't tolerate it. Because of this I've switched over to ice tea. It's not the same but at least I'm getting some caffeine in.

I started drinking coffee about 6 weeks out. I only drink about half of what I used to drink most days. Plus It helps with the Constipation issues!

I love coffee, too, and medical reports show it can be good for folks. My written instructions post-surgery included being able to drink de-caf coffee and tea. I find de-caf tastes odd to me.

I talked with my dietician today who told me there are several reasons the written list instructs this: caffiene is a diurectic, and caffiene can also soften stools. She told me to go ahead and drink a cup/drink of it, if I wanted to, daily, as it might actually help my infrequent Constipation to abate.

I'm a coffee addict. They gave me coffee in the hospital after my leak test, and I've had it every single day since. I do tend to have issues with excess acid (go figure), but it's worth it--I drink probably 2 large iced coffee drinks a day. One drink will last me several hours. You just have to be careful with the acid and to stay hydrated (extra Water, please!). Since I drink milk in my coffee, it's one way I get a little Protein in, so that's my story and I'm sticking to it. :-)

But you definitely need to do what your doctor says. Mine didn't have a problem with it (maybe he was really listening when I told him I was a coffeeholic!), but he also didn't prescribe Prilosec for me--I found out about that from folks on this forum. The coffee thing is something I know I should probably kick for my health, but wow.... I just don't want to. How horrible is that?!?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
