Excess Skin Fear!

Recommended Posts

Hey yall!!

I think my biggest fear or what I'm most hesitant ab regarding this surgery is to have all this extra loose skin hanging. I keep hearing people say 'Oh you're 23? You'll snap right back no problems' but i guess I was wondering and hoping for some legitimate clarification. What do yall do to prevent the excess skin and are their ppl around my age who didn't have a problem and DID snap right back??

Thanks :)

You can't really "prevent" excess skin.

It's somewhat based on age, but at 23 it's not nearly as much of a factor (if you were like 16 - maybe.)

IMO the two biggest factors are how much your skin has been stretched, and for how long. Close runner-ups are you genetics (predisposition to saggy skin, elasticity, etc.) and lifestyle (how healthy your skin is).

Things like rate of loss really don't play as much of a role as people think they do.

I do know a handful of WLSers around your age, some younger & some older. The above has held true with them. Those who were extremely overweight for the majority (or all) of their lives have the worst skin. Those who quickly gained, and then quickly lost, smaller amounts of weight are having a better time. I can't rule out their genetics, but that's the observable trend.

I have zero loose skin. I chose a slightly higher goal weight for that reason. I am in a size 10-12 or a med- large top. I am hovering right around 170. But I look good and curvy and feel great, no hanging or lose skin. This weight is easy to maintain. I am 29 years old this week! I have lost almost 100 pounds.

Happy birthdayyyy!!

I have no loose skin either for the exact same reasons as Sleeve Of Steel. I also kept my arms, legs, and stomach moisturized with Palmer's stretch mark cream because it has collagen, elastin and Vitamin e. That may have helped a bit.

I am 45 and have no loose skin started at 250 now 182. However, I workout everyday and lift weights most days when I workout. Like Weetsin stated it depends on how long you've been fat and how stretched out your skin is so of course a 25 year old skin is not as stretched out as a 65 year old. Good luck to you. Personally, I would rather be slim and healthy with excess skin than fat and unhealthy with smooth skin.

I have this same fear. Did you end up having the surgery, or will you have it?

My thighs are the worst so I just don't look at them :) I have been going to consultations for a butt fat transfer and thigh lift, but another surgery...well really the cost of another surgery is just too much. Next month I will pay off the surgery...taking on another debt might not be worth it.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
