ok, so I know we arent to drink coffee because of the caffine and although I am not real exited about giving up my coffee I will. But, I also drink a LOT of peach tea (sweetened with splenda) pretty much all day long and I am thinking oh no do I have to give up my peach tea?

I also see people post about drinking coffee Post-op....so I am wondering how soon after can you start back on caffine? I use to drink a pot a day...but lately I am down to only 1 cup max 2 on the weekend when I am home and just enjoy drinking it....so its not too bad.

I also realize I can drink Decaf tea....it would just be a change and if I can still drink what I am used to (have stocked in my cabinet) that would be great.

Remind me, what is the reason behind no caffine anyway? My hubby had RNY and never stopped drinking his (but I am sure he was supposed to).

My doc is pretty conservative, and he even cleared me to drink one cup of coffee per day as soon as I was home from the hospital. I didn't want it right away, so I think I waited 2 weeks.

You have to be sure to keep up on your Water intake though, because it's got a diuretic effect.

Caffeine seems to be one of those things that varies widely depending on the doctor. My doctor allowed caffeine the whole time. I could have gotten a cup of coffee while still in the hospital if I wanted. I didn't have coffee until about 1 1/2 weeks after just by choice, but have had it every day since. I drink it with fat free milk and no sugar so it doesn't add a lot of calories. There is some debate that it interferes with healing since it is a stimulant, but not sure how much that has been studied. It is also a diuretic so I don't include it in my liquid totals since it isn't exactly hydrating. I also drink iced tea often with no issues. Personally I don't like the taste of Decaf tea. Plus it is impossible to get decaf iced tea if you are out some where.

The caffeine is suppose to dehydrate you. I was told and I believe I read it also that the coffee is suppose to irritate your new stomach during the healing process. It has something in it that can irritate the stomach much like fruit acid can. I am sure after you are totally healed coffe would be ok. I am not sure how long that process actually takes though. I would have to find my paper work from Dr. Garcia that says when you can start eating raw fruit but I would think you could drink your coffee about the same time. That is my best guess lol.

Teas contain acids & tannins that are thought to have the potential to be irritants to the suture line. And they're diuretics. And usually caffeinated.

I'm not yet sure what drinking caffeine has to do with wightloss. I know lots of non-WLS people who drink caffeinated drinks with no problems.

My NUT said no tea, ever. That just makes no sense. I have no problems with caffeine or blood pressure. I don't drink coffee or soda. I drink Water, tea, and low sugar fruit juices (or fresh made with my juicer) pretty exclusively. I've followed her advice to the letter as much as I can, but that's just one I don't get. We're talking tea, not a double fat milkshake with triple caramel Syrup. Tea, unsweetened. Tea. I generally have an 8oz cup of fresh brewed tea over ice once daily, about 4x a week. Surprise, everyone but "the" NUT (my program has 4) is fine with this, as long as I remember it is a diuretic.

Same here, Doc said no coffee but Decaf was ok. I am a pot a day coffee drinker, habit from 20 years in service. Almost made me hit the floor when I heard this. I actually get a Migraine if I go more than 2 days without it. Been trying to cut back but it still will be hard. This will probably be the hardest part of all to conquer.

Because I was told caffeinated drinks can dehydrate you, I stopped immediately after that 1st nut visit. I love the celestial seasonings caffeine free teas. I buy regular Decaf tea to make my iced tea; since I don't like sweetened, it works for me. My daughter adds lemonade sugar free mix to the iced tea.

I can see that when you are early in the post-op routines and it is hard to get your fluids in, it would be counter productive to drink a diuretic beverage, but after awhile, getting in your fluids isn't that difficult. Also, it made sense to avoid any irritants while the stomach staple line was still healing - so I abstained.

By the time I got to 6 weeks when I was allowed to move to normal foods, I added back my regular coffees and teas, no problem. I actually allowed myself Arizona diet green tea even earlier than that, like 4 weeks out.

I haven't had any problems with my coffee or teas!!

I love coffee with sugar free Creamers. My doctor said I could drink it after a month. I have gone to the Half-Caff and

doing fine. I just need it in the mornings.

I do wonder if it can make you feel hungery?

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
