Aussie Roll Call

bronnie70: The first week after surgery, I was very tender around the stomache and was quite nauseated for most of the time. The second week, I struggled with stomache & shoulder pains "gas" its quite painful, especially while everything is still sore and swollen. You will find Mylanta a life saver. I also suffered with moods swings a lot, I put this down to not being able to take my Menopause Medication, withdrawal from Yunk food and Detox. This 3rd week, I FEEL GREAT, my mind is so sharp and clear, I have more energy and am back into going out, catching up with friends, I'm back to work and loving life. The liquid diet has not been at all hard for me, I've really enjoyed it I have a great variety of milky drinks, Soups, yoghurt, jelly etc. I've had no complications at all apart from normal things you expect after surgery (adjusting) I had no infection with incision/wounds. So far all is good. I don't for one minute regret my decision. I sincerely hope all goes well for you. Stay in touch, keep us posted :welldone: CHEERS to Happy Healthy Eating

Wanted to pass on some info that was passed my direction by a lady on this site 'fee'....

As my appointment for my initial consultation isnt until 12th february she suggested i try to book in to see a dietician and a physician just after that thus saving on being put on a lengthy waiting list to see these professionals.

I did just that and will see both on the 14th february. Therefore apart from being sent for a blood test that week i hopefully want have to wait too long for the procedure as im going private.

Can i get my local GP to do the blood tests a week or so prior to me seeing Dr Nottle and i'll have the results to show him and the physician?? Is there anyone else id need to see prior to the op??

Hey thats great news....congrats you sound very overwhelmed:)

Im not sure about getting the local gp to write up the blood test to get done...im guessing the gp would have to find out off Peter which blood test u need and if he gets the info then i dont see why the gp cant write u one:).

That is it really...no one else unless you have to do the sleep test but the physician will let you know about that

Hey fee... your correct im one happy girl and i havernt even had the op yet.

I just can visualize a skinnier, healthier me and i cant wait.

I went onto dr nottle's website and it gives a list of the blood tests usually required and being a nurse i can add a few others just incase he wants more. Think i will get my GP to do them about a week prior to seeing Dr Nottle.

Fee: OMG at 40 kilo weight loss - GREAT going, I bet you don't know yourself?

bronnie70: You sound like your all fired up and on a roll Way To Go Girl!!

I insisted on my Blood Tests being done at my first Appointment. They had a blood nurse at the specialist rooms, how lucky was that?

CHEERS :teeth:

They havernt told me to fast for my initial consult so i doubt blood tests will be done on that day. i believe i need chol, fasting sugars etc

Id imagin the physician will require my blood test results when i see him on 14/2/07. since im seeing Dr nottle 2 days prior blood test results will not be available by the wednesday so its probably wise to get my GP to organize them. So be it if then Dr Nottle wants them done again.

Hi Bronnie and Gerbera and Sierra, Actually I am scared of the actual operation to be honest. My anesthetist called me yesterday and we talked about the anesthetic and my fears etc. I am looking forward to taking control of my life etc though. Susannah

Hi Bronnie, what made you choose Dr Nottle as apposed to another surgeon? Did you have any others in mind? Did you go to an info night? Susannah

hi...funny story...I am a nurse and was at work in approx august 2006 and began to get in a discussion with a patient about weight. She then progressed to tell me she use to way 150kg. i couldnt believe it as this lady weighed 65kg on admission for an unrelated minor procedure. I was amazed. I then started asking questions and she gave me Dr Nottles name and i went from there. I have not attended any info nights etc and most of the info i have obtained is from the internet. I had heard dr nottles name is passing in the medical field and had only heard positive things.

Hi Susannah, Bronnie - anyone I missed :)

Gerbera, I see you've got the link to Dr. Leong's surgery in your profile. Are you happy with his work? What was his surgery/staff like in terms of pre/after care?

I was considering looking at the Adelaide Bariatric Centre down in Bedford Park, because when I was researching who to see (frankly) their website was the most professional and seemed to have the most information on it. But I don't know of anyone who's been there, and as much as I trust their testimonials, I would like some first-hand advice.

Plus I see Dr. Leong has a practice in Salisbury, which for me in Parafield Gardens makes a lot more sense.

Of course, any other SA banders who've been to ABC, I'd like to hear from you too if you're out there!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
