Insurance Denial Because Of Gap In Weight History?

Recommended Posts

So I am the type of person who has to have things in order before I do something major. :-)

I am looking through my insurance documents to see what all I will need for approval. I went without any insurance for 2.5 years from mid 2007 to early 2009. Late 2008 I thought I found a way to lose weight and keep it off... Well it did not work and three years later I am back up plus 20lbs. My insurance company requires 5 years weight history, but I only have 3, and a portion of that time my weight was down. Do you think they would accept weight history prior to losing my insurance? If they look at that they will see I have had weight issues basically my whole life... I think I'm having more signs of hypoglycemia more often. Also diabetes, high blood pressure, and congestive heart failure runs in my family.... So I need this so I can get married to my wonderful fiancé and start a family and be there for the kids when we have them...

Sorry for the rambling, but I am so freaked that they will tell me no........

I had the same problem....I have united healthcare and they denied me because I didn't have 5 years in a row of 40+ bmi. I have been fighting with them for the last three years over this! So I am now going to go to mexico and forget trying to put it through to the ins again!

I have United too and needed the 5 years of BMI at 40 or greater. When I first started looking into this it was October last year and I only had 4 yrs of 40BMI so I had to wait until January to get weighed again at my Doctor's office. But, the approval went really fast after that and my delays in getting the surgery were my choosing.

So.... Has anyone had good luck with UHC and not have records for 5 years of BMI 40+? I have records showing I have been over the 35 mark through most of my 20's. But I didn't have insurance for a few years, so there are no medical records for 2007 and 2008, when I was at this weight. I don't want to weight five years and not do anything. But I don't have the money to get sleeved in Mexico... :-(

I don't have the money for Mexico right now either....so I am waiting just a little longer until next year and then I am going to use part of our tax return to pay for it. I also don't want to become in debt because of the surgery! I would probably be able to get UHC to pick it up next year....but I have no clue what the bill to me will be! I like knowing that 6K (including airfair) is all I need to be on my way to finding me!

Best of luck to you!

Sleevehopeful, good luck and I hope you have a smooth trip and quick recovery!! So happy you have the opportunity to go to Mexico! :-)

Sherry, that gives me hope. I have the Choice Plus HDHP... So fingers crossed they approve me. Going to call them to see what they say about it. Fingers crossed.

Yes, I was denied because I didn't have 2 consecutive years of weight history. I just never went to the Dr. If you message me, I will tell you what I did.. :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
