Was just informed by my surgeron today that he would like me to be off my meds at least one month before surgery. He reallys recommends 2 months. I have rheumatoid arthritis and I knew I would go off my biologics. I didn't know he wanted me off the predisone too. I don't know how I will operate without my meds. I want this surgery so bad, but just this thought of going 2 months without meds stopping cold turkery will affect me.

my best friend suffers with rhermatoid arthritis. I can't imagine her going without her meds. - as you said also said - cold turkey

she is average weight, she hurts so much, you must be in such pain, suffer alot, i can't imagine your dr. putting you through this.

talk to the dr. for awhile

good luck

kathy

Yeah I understand stopping some meds a week or maybe even two but a month or two seems excessive and honestly cruel unless they are gonna give you something else for pain until surgery... I have fibromyalgia and an undiagnosed autoimmune disorder and I can't imagine not having my meds that long...i'd be bed ridden.

The meds mess with your immune system. When you take the meds you are more likely to get infections and so forth. It takes awhile for it to get out of your system. I understand that part. I am scare to be out of commision for that long prior to the surgery. Knowing its going to take me awhile to bounce back, since I will get a flare from having surgery.

Do all meds affect your immune system?

Yes I am on Methotraxate and Cimiza (injection) You will probably have to stop plaquenili too. I been on predisone for 10 years. He would like me to stop my predisone completly and terrifies me. I can't imagine not having any of that. And you have to be off of them for a month to 2 months afterwards. I would just make sure your Rheumatologist and Surgeron are on the same page

My rheum doc said 10 days on the Enbrel and don't have to stop mtx or sulfasalazine. Surgeon agreed. They said I can restart 4+ days post op provided there is no fever or infection. The views have changed a lot on biologics and surgery. Although prednisone can increase infection risk, if you have been on it this long I'm surprised they aren't increasing it during surgery because of the risk of cortisol insufficiency.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
