Testing Out Different Protein Drinks Before Surgery

Recommended Posts

I have not had surgery yet but I too was planning on trying out some Protein drinks prior to surgery. My doctor recommended that I don't buy too much of any now because my taste buds will change after surgery. Has anyone else been told that?

There is something to that statement. I'm 4 weeks out today and much more sensitive to sweet things. I had something fairly sweet to drink in the liquid postop portion of my diet that I used to love once in awhile preop and I could only stand a couple of drinks of. It was too sickenly sweet. My Protein shake also doesnt taste the same to me. I still cannot get one full one down. Maybe its more my brain influencing these tastes but it sure feels like my taste buds and tummy saying no. It is really hard to explain unless you've been there. Preop, I too was skeptical of that "your taste buds may change" statement. Postop, I'm here to tell you there is something to it. I support your doctor. Don't buy too much of anything. It may be wasted postop.

Good luck to you!

Misty,

I tried the Visalus and i just didn't care for the texture once I tried to stir it into milk.

Thanks though.

I thought about trying Visalis but it is made from soy Protein & we need whey. It also did not have a large amount of protein per serving.....thought I'd stay away from it because I've heard it tastes good, but if it's not preferred for the things above I dont even want to try! Maybe there are other varieties?

I didn't like it anyway, and yes we do need the whey.

I just tried the GNC Gold standard vanilla and it wasn't too bad. But my tummy is killing me right now, idk if it has anything to do with that or not but ouchie!

FYI- Whey DOES have milk so.....make sure the bottle/packet says "Whey Protein ISOLATE." That's what she told us at nutrition class yesterday. :)

You have to try a bunch. I tried about 8 to 10th before settling on the Premier Protein ready to drink shakes. BTW, I didn't like Chieke either.

I find that so strange that taste buds will change after a surgery. I mean taste is in your mouth' date=' your tongue, not your stomach.

I think it can be as much in your head as your taste buds. I was loving my cream Soups during my preop diet. I have several left over sitting on an open pantry in full view in the kitchen and I haven't touched them since my surgery. Just thinking about eating some makes me want to gag.

Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought I was the only one who thought Chike was terrible. I like the premier shakes; ordered Unjury, the synthax nectar and I love the Permalene - bodacious berry.< /p>

Oh God me too, my pre-op diet made me never want to touch a creamed Soup EVER again, lol and I'm almost 8 months out. I still have a ton of SF Jello and pudding in there too lol

I moved to mushies a week and one day ago. I cannot imagine having another cream soup for a very long time. Not is, unless it includes some chunks of something really good. :-)

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
