Has anyone been turned down for surgery because they were at risk for blood clots? I lost my mom 3 months ago to a blood clot that developed in her broken leg and must have broken free. I don't have any family history on either side of blood clots, I've never had one and had surgery before....my gyno sent 3 blood tests off for evaluation and they might not be back in time for my surgery. Someone please send me some comfort! I don't want to have to postpone my surgery for something that they have medicines for!

Hi Gingersnap. I was just diagnosed with a provoked clot in my calf and surgeon says surgery will be delayed about 3 months. I am happy it is not longer!

In reality, it's better that they take preventative practices right now. Blot clot are extremely dangerous and we want you to be safe. :)

Mine was delayed due to an actual clot. There are several ways to prevent clots from developing, and from moving after they develop. Be cooperative with your doctors if they suggest a filter, meds, or shots to treat the clots.

Good luck!

But what if I don't have a blood clot...just might be a carrier? Do you think he would postpone it then knowing I don't have a clot?

I doubt the doctor would postpone your surgery because your mother had a blood clot. You should definitely tell the surgeon and let him decide if there's a need for the preventative measures. Your mom had a broken leg, which caused her to be much less active than normal and escalated her risk for a blood clot, from what you posted earlier. That does NOT mean you're more at risk, usually. There are tests which can determine if you're more likely to have a blood clot.

You also have some control over the likelihood of a clot: stop smoking (if you do), make sure you're as active as possible, this means at least 5,000 steps a day, so take up walking. Drink lots of Water and keep up with your green veggies (they help thin the blood).

Good luck! Discuss this with the surgeon, though, since this seems to be something that is really on your mind.

I was given a shot of heparin in my leg once daily while in the hospital to help prevent clotting. They can keep you safe from clots if you don't already have them.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
