I wait 1 hour after meals and don't drink within an hour before my meals.

Right now my band is very tight ( just had a fill 5 days ago) so even when I'm drinking I have to take baby sips and suck on ice chips.< /p>

I respect what my surgeon/weight loss dept says but-

1) I'm a Type II Diabetic and I have to take medications with food.

2) For me, I think it is very important to get fluids in whenever I can so I take every opportunity.

This is just works for me.

Does the band get tighter while flying in an airplane? I am flying during the summer months and would like to know what I should do on the prior days before the flight. The plane ride will be at a duration of 7 hours from Atlanta to Portland, Oregon. Thank you for responding...

Okay .... what I want to know is the weight loss comparision between those who don't drink and those who do... I got my first fill yesterday and was CHEWED out by my doc for drinking with meals. He said I would have lost 2x as much if i was not drinking with meals.........So as of today. No more drinking with meals for me. However, it is going to be a hard habit to break.

banded 6/21/06

-42.5

I don't understand this. I am under the impression that not drinking with meals is so that you don't wash the food through the band, causing you to get hungry more quickly between meals and consequently eating more. However, if you drink with your meals but DO NOT snack between meals or eat larger portions at meals as a result, how does simply drinking make a difference in the weight loss?

Fanny, if you drink with meals, it does wash the food through meaning that you can eat more of the meal. So, if you usually can only eat a small portion without drinking, when you take sips or drinks it flushes out the pouch so you can eat a much bigger portion (full size).

A banded co-worker does this and he can eat a full dinner size plus dessert by this method.

I sometimes drink with my meal but usually if I do it is under 1/4 Cup and is Water. Occasionally I will have wine, but again it is a small amount.

I'm still working on this. If I do drink with a meal I take just a small sip and move it around in my mouth to quench the dry mouth but I really try hard not to do it at all. I do drink before meals and I don't think I'm waiting long enough after to eat though. I barely have any restriction since I'm newly banded and have no Fluid in the band. I will really need to perfect this once getting filled.

The band will not be effected while in the plane. I flew to Mexico to get my band and I didn't notice anything on the flight home.

My doctor and nutritionist encourage us to follow the "30 Rule" - no drinking 30 minutes before, chew each bite 30 times before swallowing, no drinking for 30 minutes after. I have only been banded since March 1 but I am following this rule 100%. I attribute some of my success to this. Also the few times I have had a problem were times that I didn't follow this rule. It is working fo rme. Good luck all.

Ok, so like I said: "if you drink with your meals but DO NOT snack between meals or eat larger portions at meals as a result" then the Water doesn't magically make you gain weight. I think people need to keep this in mind. The rule against drinking water is so that you don't eat larger portions at meals or quickly become hungry again after meals. If the water is NOT causing you to do these things, then taking a couple of sips with your meal to help rinse your mouth probably won't hurt a great deal. Knocking back a full glass or more with dinner is likely to have that result and should be avoided.

I really do try to stick with this rule as best I can. I do sometimes, although rarely do take a tiny sip of Water. Not enough to really even worry about.

It was hard at first, but I did get over this before surgery so now it's not really a big deal for me.

Also to add, my dietician mentioned that not to drink for about an hour after my meal as well. I typically wait even longer than that, more like one hour before my next meal. I then pack my water so as not to interfere with my next meal, while getting my quota.

I drink right up until my meal, and then weight a half hour after to start drinking again.

Honestly, its NOT that hard. Just put the glass away if you're tempted to drink.

im sure that a sip of Water wouldnt hurt, especially if you're taking a pill that requires to be taken with food.< /span>

if I can do it, ANYONE can :P

I drink with my meals but it doesn't seem to make me hungry or PB. I eat three times a day with no Snacks. When I first decided to look into lapband I was at 236, day of surgery I was at 226, and today i'm at 194. I feel my weight loss has been going well so unless I the weight loss slows down or it makes me PB i'll probably continue to drink during meals.

Edit: I forgot to mention I got banded on March 27, 2008

Not drinking with my meals has been difficult because I have always drank with my meals my entire life. I drink up to meal times but wait at least 1/2 hour after meals before I drink. I don't like it but I didn't like getting so fat that I had to undergo WLS. After going through WLS and paying all that money to change my life, I'm not going to sabotage myself by not following the rules.

Wtf. 16% always and 28% somtimes??? :mad2:

Holy shit, people, have some self control. This eliminates the use of the damn lap band! You have to really be trying to mess up the lap band "diet" if you're always drinking while eating.

Don't drink while eating! Only before! :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
