I guess it depends on your insurance. I have a PPO, so I don't need a referral from a primary care for specialists. My insurance also doesn't cover bariatric surgery, so I was self-pay. I went to the surgeon first and then to my primary care because the surgeon did want my primary care's "clearance" for surgery. When I went to see her, I just told her that I was having the surgery and needed her clearance. She did not really agree with me since the sleeve is not reversible. However, she did know I had been trying to lose weight for over the past year and wasn't very successful. She did an EKG in the office and that was abnormal, so she said I had to see a cardiologist before she'd give her clearance. I did that & the cardiologist did a stress test and said I was fine. They sent all their info to my primary care. She basically couldn't say "no" at that point because I was fit enough to handle surgery, so she faxed her "clearance" to the surgeon's office.

If you have a PPO, I would go see a surgeon first and go from there. Maybe the surgeon could talk to your PCP about it. If you've tried in the past to lose weight and have been unsuccessful, maybe you could show that information to your PCP to show him that you have tried.

If you have an *** and need a referral, then I'm not really sure what you can do other than showing your PCP that you've tried in the past, and just pleading with him to reconsider a consultation with a surgeon.

If you've only been seeing your PCP for 4 months, he might not realize your true history. I had been seeing my PCP for 3 years and have been working on my weight for about 18 months and she knew of things I had tried and how I had done with different things. Although she didn't really agree with me, she knew I had tried other things.

If you're religious at all, pray for your doctor's heart to be opened and softened to your situation if this surgery truly is the right thing for you and your family.

I've worked in healthcare for over 10 years. I can tell you that some do tors are either really for or against wls. Just like some doctors won't get on board with prescribing diet pills. I feel like they really just don't understand our struggles. I'm glad you moved on. I feel like your old pcp could have used this opportunity to familiarize himself with the pros and cons of wls, before jumping the gun. Then he doesn't even have the balls to face you himself, what a coward.

Yes I was open w him from the beginning my heart doc is on board w it I have recommendation from him my pcp even asked me once how did my heart doc feel about it ... But to answer your Q my insurance company pays for it my surgeons nurse would to find that out in the beginning to even continue on w the process and I've calls several times ... Yes it's only been four months but I told him in the beginning that we could build a patient doc relationship and he had his nurse call me and say he would do I just think he should tell me why he's not and I don't want to pay a copay to found out he's my pcp he should just call me

My insurance covers it I had to find that out first my surgeons office required that ... I just think he should call me and tell me why and I think it's unfair to pay a copay to find out

I was worried about that when I went to my surgeon since I had only been with my primary doc for a few months due to us moving. He said that some primary docs are very against it, but that if she wouldnt write a letter for me, then his office could help me find someone that was more supportive. Luckily, my PCP did write the letter with no problems. I would talk to your surgeon and see if they can help. Good luck!

Definitely ask your surgeon's office for a referral to another pcp. And you may not have to do everything all over again. Most insurance requires that you do a supervised weight loss/regular check ins with a doctor or nutritionist and that you get a letter from your primary care provider recommending that you have the surgery and clearing you for surgery. But they don't HAVE to be the same doctor! For many insurance plans you can do your weight loss with one doctor and your letter of recommendation from another. Make sure all your records get transferred from your old doctor to your new doctor so that he or she can properly review them and refer to them in writing the letter.

Of course, this is not true for every insurance company and you should check the requirements of your own plan. Good luck!

Can you have your surgeon ir his office call your pcp and explain the benefits of this surgery for you. Another option would be to send a letter to your pcp certified, return receipt so it looks official stating just what you told us. Why you went to him, how he agreed when you first saw him to write the letter, how he said the letter was being written and then backed out. I would probably give him an out in the letter and say something like I just wanted to remind you of our first conversation. I figured after speaking with the nurse that maybe you forgot our conversation (if you remember the date include that). Maybe say something like because I'm sure you wouldn't intentionally go back on your word, waste my time, money, etc. I would try before trying with another doctor. He may just need some persuading. Good luck.

Let me just tell you, when i read the title of your thread i was like "WHACHU MEAN HE CHANGED HIS MIND?!?!? YOU SHOULD SLAP THE FOO" my inner voice is kind of ghetto lol. But seriously? what a coward hiding behind his nurse. You should confront him about it,but then again maybe you shouldn't waste your time. People like that are so annoying they think some chemicals will somehow make you drop 100 pounds (without killing you) yeah not gonna happen

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
