I was drinking Decaf coffee almost immediately after surgery and I still drink decaf regularly. I haven't had "regular" coffee more than a very few times since surgery and I really don't miss it. I had a major diet coke addiction pre-op and the caffeine withdrawal was horrid, so I'd prefer not to repeat that process.

Caffeine is a diuretic and we need all the hydration we can get, which is another reason to avoid the caffeine.

*sigh* I wish that I had taken Lissa's path, but I drink half-caf every day. I waited until I was about 4 months out.

I was never restricted from coffee. In fact, I was given it in the hospital during recovery. But I didn't drink sodas or anything but Water really before surgery. And only one cup of coffee during the day. That's right after I leave the gym. Really don't understand why everyone had to stop. Coffee is actually good for you... That's what DR. OZ said.

I was told caffeine was allowed for me after 1 week post op. Personally I was addicted to caffeine though... either diet coke or coffee. So not going to go back to that & stick to de-caf coffee from now on.

Also was told no soda post-op, so sticking to that!

I don't drink coffee, but my surgeon's guidelines say no caffeine for life after surgery. I know people who have had surgery with the same surgeon who drink coffee anyway though.

The NO coffee "rule" just does NOT make sense to me, same with the NO SODA or NO STRAWS or NO CHEWING GUM "rules". Everything in moderation and you should be OK.

I personally drink 3 or 4 cups of Decaf most work days. I have never slept well and caffeine just makes it worse, but I still enjoy a good cup of decaf joe with a dash of non dairy Creamer and artificial sweetener in it. I also use straws, chew sugar free gum and drink diet sodas regularly and have lost and kept off 170 pounds.

If you have issues with it then DON'T, if you can handle then DO IT IN MODERATION. It is after all typically a bunch of "little issues" that got us into this mess of obesity after all - e.g. "What's wrong another cookie? They're small . . ." . A cup of regular or decaf is fine, loading it up with Creamers, syrups, sugars or other stuff? Maybe it's time to stop.

There is NOTHING inherent about the sleeve that prohibits coffee consumption.

Ive had regular coffee since 1 week out and have lost 54 lbs in 11 weeks. I was a diet coke addict but that I stay away from.

I am on pre-op day # 10day and it is sooooo hard. I had my last daily non-fat latte today. BUT I intend to still have my one latte a day at sometime after surgery and healing. I was told to drink more Water after having it. It suppresses hunger but also a diuretic. So I will drink lots of water. What kind of other pre-op diets has everyone else been on for 2 wks. before surgery?

It was explained to me that the straw and gum chewing causes you to swallow air, which can cause stretching to the pouch. Soda, well that's a given with the carbonation, that's just not good to have, it does stretch your pouch. Coffee was not restricted for me, just caffeine. The only thing they told me about coffee is that because it's acidic, it can cause discomfort and possibly cause ulcers in your stomach because of the acid if you have too much. I know people who have had the surgery and drink diet pop regularly without any problems. I guess it just depends on the person and personal control to not go back to the bad habits that got them in the situation of needing surgery in the first place.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
