Pre Op Ketosis Diet

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else had to do a pre op 5 day ketosis diet? It was not fun but I made it to day 5...and lost 10lbs! I was allowed 9 oz of lean Protein, 3 cups broth, 6 oz Jello, 64 oz of Water divided into 3 meals. On day six I go for urine test to confirm ketosis. This shows that you were able to follow rules and that you are serious about surgery.

Now...to keep this 10 lb off and lose more by July!

I didn't have to do it to confirm ketosis, but to shrink my liver. I had to have 650 calories with at least 70 grams of Protein, less than 60 grams carbs, and around 10 grams fat per day for 2 weeks prior to surgery. I could eat normal food if I stayed in the guidelines, but I opted to stick primarily to Protein Shakes. I lost 12.6 lbs. Today I'm on all Clear Liquids in final preparation for surgery tomorrow.

You must be excited, best of luck! I will have to do 2 weeks of low cal/low fat right before surgery in July.

I think I'm doing a Ketosis diet even though my doctor hasn't called it that. I can have 4 oz of Protein and green vegetables (except peas). I am required to consume 4 nutritional supplements (protein-enriched bars, Soups, and shakes) daily. I am on day 4, and I've lost 7 pounds. My surgery is May 25th.

3 Protein Shakes a day and clear liquids for two weeks. Week 1 is down, so I'm sure I must be in ketosis with that diet. Lost 7 lbs in the first week.

I can't see where to find help with this, so please excuse me asking here, but how do include a ticker on my posts?

Thanks for any help!

If you aren't used to a very low carb diet you will know when you have ketosis. Your breath will be AWFUL within an hour after you brush your teeth. The last 3 days of my pre-op diet I was swishing almost hourly because my breath was SO bad I could smell it. Its part of ketosis and there is little to be done about it until you either up your carb intake or wait a few weeks (I hear it tapers out for some people with time).

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
