Help......is This Normal?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone

I have been sleeved May 1 and have been doing great no pain meds needed, staying active....woke up in the middle of the night with a scratchy feeling in my throat, feeling like I need to caugh but when I did my whole mouth was filled with bitter saliva. I coughed once or twice and drank a bunch of Water. (like a cup of it) No pain, the water went down without any problems, the only symptom is feeling like I'm congested (a little wheezing and rattling in my chest) and great bitterness in the back of my throat. Every time I caugh the saliva that comes up is clear and very bitter. Any thoughts or suggestions

That's reflux I reckon. If your surgeon prescribed proton pump inhibitors (ppi's) you should take them. If not you should get them. You maybe need to get to your pcp to check on the wheezing because you don't want to aspirate stomach juices - it could lead to pneumonia. I'm no doctor or nurse by the way, I'm just summising and you're best to get a professional opinion.

This is so weird..... same thing just happened to me! I woke up about a half hour ago with bitter Fluid coming up my throat. It's still burning. This is about the third or fouth time it's happened. I am a revision from the band and remember this problem if my band was tight or I drank too close to bed time.

I just got my sleeve on May 4th, so I'm wondering if this will continue to be a problem or is it something that happens at the beginning and then subsides?

Thanks for any advice.... I'm a noob sleever and looking for all the help I can get :D

I agree with Polly, it sounds like acids reflux. You may nerf to take your ppi twice a day and try tums too. Good luck.

Def. sounds like refux, except "bitter saliva" is probably your stomach acid. That's why there's burning, irritation, etc. You can also aspirate the acid (I did several times when I had really bad reflux from a slipped lapband). Usually it's very painful - exactly what you'd think acid in your lungs would feel like, and it always left me congested and wheezy. I even ended up with aspiration pneumonia twice.

With our PPIs, reduced content of acid, etc. I'm guessing that's what made it not immediately recognizable as acid, made the irritation not as severe, etc.

When you reflux, it's not uncommon to cough stuff up for a while. When I had it really bad, it would sometimes be hard not to puke just because of the taste - and when you're coughing up popcorn husks that you ate 6 hours ago, and have to dig them out of your mouth, that's no fun.

Everyones response is the same as what I would have said. See your doc asap. Reflux can cause esophageal erosion and eventually cancer. Don't just let it continue.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
