I Really Thought I Was Prepared

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I have been reading on this website and thought I was really prepared for this surgery. WOW what a rough week it has been. I ended up having to stay in the hospital for 4 days due to the fact I could not hold down any fluids. They finally got the vomiting under control and I was able to come home on Sunday. I have not had to take any pain meds since I have been home even though I had a hernia repair, my lapband removed and my sleeve done all at the same time.

I am just struggling with all my might to hold down the fluids. I am not throwing up. It just hurts like hell to put them in my tummy : ( It seems like my sleeve keeps going into spasms? That is the only was I can describe it. It is like where my stomach and my esophagus meet I keep having these horrible pains? Anyone else have this problem??

I just hope it will get better. Oh my gosh I know when I go to the doctor on Friday for my 1 week post op visit I will be moved to the mushy stage. I cant even think about eating pudding at this point I would be afraid it will kill me.

Praying it will get better.

Try sticking with clear fluids for a day or two. I found that warm Water, tea, and the like were easier to keep down than cold. If you're really in a lot of pain, give your doc a call.

How slowly are you drinking the fluids. I literally took a full 15 minutes to drink one ounce the first few days out. Also, my tummy was really picky about the temp. I only tolerated lukewarm fluids. Not cold or hot. You probably have more swelling than most. You might consider a clear Protein, such as powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken. It was a lifesaver for me. Mixed with Water and easier to get down than ones I had to mix with soymilk.

Keep an eye on it and don't get dehydrated. The doctor can give you an IV if you truly can't get fluids down.

Best wishes,

Lynda

Yes! I am 5 days post op and also had hernia repair along with my new sleeve! It felt like a contraction to me? Today, I have felt it a lot less. I did lots of sugar free popsicles and Italian Ice (made with Splenda)! For warmth, I did lots of hot Crystal Light lemon aid and boy did it help. Use your pain meds! They really make a difference. I halved mine along with half of the nausea meds every 4 hours.

Hope you're better soon!

I was on Clear Liquids for two weeks. Do not feel compelled to move on to those mushies! The swelling will go down and you'll feel better every day. Take it easy and try to get walking if you can, it does help the overall healing process.

I remember the cramps post-op. Even six weeks out I still get the pain in the valve at the top of the tummy if I drink/eat too quickly. It's a little reminder to us! You sound like you've had it a bit rough. Hang in there, it gets better!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
