How strange - we have both gone to opposite foods! Managed to refrain today so that is my first step to getting back on track with the healthy eating!

Back in the zone!

Sara and Lila I'm sorry you both had the same problem but it makes me feel better to know I'm not alone.

Deano, yeah I'm in a dilemma re work. I actually feel ok but I'm a teacher and I was going to work for the next few days to work with my co teacher re planning etc. I have to be back next Thursday and Friday and my boss is not that sympathetic to people taking time off. That is 15 days post op so hopefully everything will be settled by then. I just re-read what I wrote and it sounds pathetic I know. If I'm not up to going back the first few days then I won't. I have heaps of sick leave and if I have to take it I will. How assertive is that?

Nothing pathetic about trying to do the right thing by work, but your health comes first :)

Hi all, just been reading through the posts and wow u guys are rocking it. Me on the other hand,struggling....... Im finding it real hard to eat. Yesterday I had 3/4 toast ( which came back up) bout 100g fish, Iced tea 500ml, 1ltr Water. I am always feeling run down but cant force myself to eat anything. I am around the 11 weeks (i think). I am having a multi every day. I have been back training on my days off but you can guess I am drained start to finish. Been stalling all the time lost around 27kgs so pretty happy with that still another 15-20 to go. My only naughty thing is I have a rum n coke about 3 days a week. I try and eat mainly Protein ( when I am eating), cant really stomach the shakes anymore. Just lately always feeling run down and off. Really struggle with the Water but iced tea goes down well, cant even stand diet cordial or other flavourings. Any hoo that was my wo is me whinge. Glad ur all doing well.

Hi Scotty - Sorry you aren't feeling top of your game. I felt exactly the same way and can honestly say that I have only felt normal at the 6 month mark! I found that my problems related to not eating enough because I just couldn't get the amount of calories down in only 3 meals a day. I changed my eating to 6 times a day so eating every 2-3 hours - sticking to Protein for main meals and veges/nuts and fruit for in between meals - as you have probably read in my last few posts I haven't exactly been very good lately!

Anyway, prior to eating more often, I felt that I had no energy, felt generally off colour and then therefore felt like I didn't want to eat - viscous circle! I also couldn't imagine exercising! I also found the time frame between drinking before food is a real issue for me - I have to wait at least half an hour after drinking to be able to eat properly and the same time if not longer to wait to drink after I have eaten.

I don't know if this will work for you but hope it helps! :-)

That's rough dude!

Must be really hard to train on those calories.

Have you always had toast for Breakfast? I know I find bread really hard. Tried it once, haven't gone back.

A guy at work whose son is a pro Thai boxer put me onto 'cold porridge'. 30 or 40 grams of porridge oats in a bowl. Pour milk until it's covered well. Cling wrap and put in the fridge over night. I stir it up in the morning and add a little more milk, like a tablespoon. Some times I'll put 3 slices of banana (kids eat the rest on their weet bix) or slice up a strawberry. Some times I'll add a dash of sugar free maple flavoured Syrup (tastes nothing like maple syrup, but it's alright).

The oats are a really clean Breakfast and without being cooked have a heap of natural sweetness (I was surprised).

From memory I thing 40g of oats is 152 cals 6 gm Protein.

Having that an hour before you train might help? Just a suggestion,

Deano

Hi Scotty, sorry to hear you ate struggling, but congratulations on your weight loss to date. If you haven't seen a dietician lately it sounds like you may benefit from doing so as it doesn't sound as though you are eating enough and obviously that is impacting your energy levels etc.

Thanks guys for the posts, I might try those oats Dean. I was only eating toast as I thought it might be light enough to stay down. I had to reschedule my dieticians appt. I'm sure it'll get better.

Hi Everyone

Before my sleeve I used to be a toast and cup of tea for breakfast girl would still like to be but Protein is a priority now. I am having difficulties with food also having nausea etc so my stall at 80kg and having fairly constant diarrhoea for the last few months(sorry to gross you all out)has propelled my weight loss to 72kg now so I am almost at my goal of 65kg. I'm having a colonoscopy tomorrow(won't that be fun!)but to be honest I don't care what they do to me as long as I feel well again. The B12 injections have cleared some of the fog but I'm still very lethargic. I will be going back to the dietitian and seeing a naturopath after tomorrow to get back to health again. It's so important to eat nutrient dense food after our type of surgery. It's time for some more professional advice I think. Scotty have you thought about going back to basics again with a Soup. I made some chicken, leek, carrot, and potato Soup and it went down really well and has not made me feel like I want to vomit. Are you still taking the Nexium or equivalent? I hope you are feeling better soon. This is a great place for support and words of wisdom.

Hi Scotty

Sorry to hear that, but keep up the great attitude. By week 12 you should be on "almost" free diet. So unless there is something that you new little tummy dosnt like (such as creamy food or starchy food) you should be on all foods. I agree with everyone above about a quick visit with your dietitian. I know I felt 100% better off the mushies and on a normal diet. More energy and less blah!

Scotty I echo what the others have said, definitely speak to a nutritionist. I would also see your GP and do blood work, see if you are low on things like B12 and Iron which help with energy levels. I know I had B12 issues and got the shot/s and started to feel better.

I also started out eatting toast for breakky, which left me with a queasy feeling...now I have greek yoghurt and some Cereal or muesli. When I felt ill in the morning it made the rest of the day just feel off.

Good luck and i hope you are able to get it sorted soon.

SwiftKate, hope you are doing better. From memory the runs were part of the first few weeks purely because of the liquid diet, things are a bit freer...for me it did get better after moving to more solid food.

Today has been one of those days were I realise how much things have changed for me since the surgery, confidence wise. I am actually shocked/surprised this happened. Long story short cause of the ankle I have been home more frequently and last week ran into this really (seems really nice guy) in my lift and we had some chats. Anyway I was always with some carer so it didnt go any further. But I didnt know what apartment he lived in, just his floor. So I wrote a note and put it in all the apartments on his floor, saying you know would you like to have a coffee or something. Did this Sunday and really didnt think anything would come of it...anyway today I got a text message from him wanting to know if I wanted to get lunch with him. Which was sad cause I was actually at work so couldnt, anyway we have agreed to try another day....

But if nothing comes of it, fine, but 1. I had the confidence to put myself out there 2. I was engaging enough (broken ankle and all) that he remembered me and was interested enough to get in touch.

Maybe this ankle thing was for the best......Sorry I was just so excited it happened I had to share :)

Hope all goes well with the colonoscopy - I hate the prep for those with a passion!

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?
      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
