So I set up all my pre surgery appts for May 2nd including an upper GI, anyone know if this is painful? I also have a psych eval and a nutrition consult as well as lab work. After that I meet with the nurse to go over what happens pre op and post, then they set up the surgery. Im nervous, and scared that I will be unhappy post op. I already suffer with depression....

I have not had surgery (yet) but have had an upper GI (and a follow up upper GI series). I was put to sleep for the upper GI so it was actually not bad - I didnt feel a thing (no sore throat or anything). I do know someone who was not put to sleep and it was not very comfortable for her.

Ask you doctor if they put you to sleep?

I still have some pre testing to complete but I've done the uper GI X-ray. It is not painful at all. They had me get into a gown, drink the bariam drink and stand in front of the x-ray machine. They take pictures as you take big gulps. then you drink a similar drink alittle less thick, more pics... Then they had me swallow what tasted like alkaseltzer (little dry crystals) they foam up. They lay you down and take pictures to make sure you don't have reflux. Nothing was painful although it doesn't taste great and I felt very full from the barium and the crystals to the point that I thought I might bring it all up after it was over while getting dressed to go home. They encourage you to drink lots of Water after the test so that you don't get constipated. It was a very easy test in all honesty.

I have my NUT and psyche eval next week. Not sure what to expect.

I share the same emotions as you and have been reassured that they are all normal. I also suffered in the past with depression and currently take a low dose to keep me feeling human. I can't help but to wonder what this process is going to do to me mentally. I am going to do my best to remain confident and positive and pray that I don't go back down that road that I fought so hard to overcome. Best wishes to you on your journey. Feel free to stay in contact :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
