Need To Start Walking...having Trouble Getting Started

Recommended Posts

I like to walk, of course it's not easy as before because of all the excess weight. I have to walk at a fairly slower pace, my feet hurt and my ankles get swollen when I stand or walk for too long. I also plan on joining a gym after surgery, but do need to start walking know since someone here mentioned muscle loss because of rapid weight loss. Can anyone tell me how that muscle loss would affect me? I think I know, but just want to make sure.

I am so looing forward to the surgery. The waiting is tough. I am focused and ready.

The reason I barely get out is because I suffer from depression and anxiety. I know I will be able to make all my medical appointments. I am just so self conscious now but I am trying. I went out for an hour walk with my daughter over the weekend. I was proud of myself.

Well, just needed to check-in and say hello. :)

You have to find your motivation. No matter how slow you are going you are still lapping everyone who is sitting on the couch!

Set small goals for yourself. I think walking now is an excellent idea. I haven't been able to walk much because of my knees and back but I know after the surgery I'm going to tear the road up!!!

When is your date?

I think you're smart to start walking now. I really need to do the same thing.

My knees and back, though...ugh. BUT, it's not like they're going to miraculously improve the day after surgery when I have to be walking, so I should get it started now. A good reminder.

Get started now it is good for your heart, your lungs, your overall body muscles. Remember you are doing this for you and the more you walk the better you will feel. Take it at your own pace, this week I started walking down the block and then to the other end of the block, I was home for the first day after surgery. Now at day 6 after surgery I am walking around the block 3 times and will try and do that multiple times a day. I am still off from work so I want to make it a part of my routine when I do go back to work next Wednesday. The pounds will come off the more you walk and your muscles will stay strong. You can do it. I know you have depression but being in the sun will be good for that smelling the fresh air. Your neighbors will be good to see you and they will be impressed that you are out in the neighborhood and getting healthier.

For those knees and back pains..Water Arobics is the secret!....wow and after a couple of months and 57# down you'll feel more like walking because the knees and back dont mind it much!

I have taken perkecet for 4 yrs now for the pain in the back and knees...even had an MRI on the knees and many of cortizone shots....Since surgery I have not even taken one pill, after 57# my knees and back are partting as I lost 1/4 person... My legs and feet no longer fat little stubbs no kankles, in fact my kids say "mom your feet are skinny"

Good Luck,

I was the queen of not being able to walk pre-op. Everything hurt and I have RA in my knees. I went to the grocery store with a friend and had to take several breaks to finish shopping. I literally started out walking up and down the hallway in my house, then I added in walkign around the smaller end of my building, then the further end, and then the lake. I can do about 4 miles on the treadmill now and I've recently started walking to the gym in my community, about .7 miles outside. Boy that is tough right now because walking on real roads is not as smooth and easy as the treadmill.

Every little bit counts and it adds up quickly. My legs and butt look great from all the walking. Now, if my tummy would just catch up! :)

Very good point, thanks!

I did end up walking 2 days out of this week for one hour per day. So I am happy I was able to do that at least.

I haven't been given an exact date yet. I've been told it should be around August or September.

I am hoping the sooner.

Thanks for this. It's very helpful. I am so glad you're doing well. I hope I will be able to start walking soon after surgery. I am trying now, like I said I walked some this week.

Thanks, Water aerobics sounds great when I start feeling confident enough to be seen in a swimsuit, haha! I have only done that when I go away on vacation with me daughter and nobody knows me. I know what you mean about th fat little stubs, I went up a shoe size and need wide shoes ugh! and the kankles!! terrible and painful. Oh how I long to have normal ankles and feel again.

For me, the tough part is walking in my neighborhood. I live in a overpopulated town and it just doesn't help my anxiety. I think I will try weekends at the park on the track field and maybe go to the gym. I have to find a way.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
