Three Days Out And I Have Questions

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. Please help if you can. I had my surgery on April 12, 2012, three days ago. I knew it wouldn't be easy, but I do have some questions for you with things that I found "strange" 1. Did anyone else have A LOT of suliva? I feel like I have so much I can't swallow it all. 2. When does the gas pains go away? I do walk a lot and did in the hospital as well, but everytime I take a sip, I feel gas pains...is this normal? 3. Am I strange that I can't get the Protein in I am supposed to? I can't eat much right now and I feel like all I do is drink and try to eat (not at the same time). Any thoughts would help. Thanks

I was sleeved on the 12th as well and am having a very hard time getting in all my fluids because it hurts so dang bad when I drink. It feels like someone is wringing my stomach out like a dish towel with every other sip...arghh! Also, trying to sleep is next to impossible because I can't lay on my side without feeling my insides flopping around...lol sooo not cool at this phase. I'm guessing things will slowly improve for us though.

Yes, it's all very normal. It should get better every day.

There are a lot of people who can't get their Protein in until they are farther along. When the swelling is completely gone, it will be easier to eat and drink. The most important thing is to drink so you don't become dehydrated. Sip as much liquid as you can and keep in mind it will get better every day.

Oh, does this post ever bring back the memories! You think this is forever when you are in those first few weeks. But be patient....it does get better. For me, the first two weeks were the hardest. Your belly is sore & noisy. It's uncomfortable to sleep. It's hard to drink and eat. Plus, you are a little afraid.

I still don't get in enough Protein. Plus, my stomach can be a little uncomfortable at times. BUT, I've lost over 30 lbs.! And people are noticing I've lost weight! I'm over 65 yrs of age, and I feel like I've added years to my life w this surgery.

I had gas really bad before leaving hosp. Nurse told me to try gasX I used it after each meal and bedtime. Really helped I couldn't do cold things for a while so I sipped 1/2 strength apple juice an broth for meals. I think we all were able to live off fat on land for awhile so don't worry if you can't get Protein in right now as long as you keep sipping and don't get dehydrated. A few more days will make a big difference in how you feel. Good luck we all feel your pain.

Thank you all so much for your responces. One last queston. I have a lot of meds and I've been putting them in apple sauce. It's SUCKS. Any other ideas to hide the pill taste?

I can't swallow a pill at all, so I crush everything. Unfortunately applesauce is about as good as it gets. You might try sucking a sugar-free candy or lozenge after taking the pills just to get the taste out of your mouth. Just be careful not to swallow the candy.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
