Can Army Veterans Get This Procedure?

Recommended Posts

I have been researching the hell out of this myself. I have 30% service-connected, go to the VA Murfreesboro, TN. You qualify for BMI for sure. You have to ask you PCP (Primary Care Physician) to be refered to the MOVE program. You must be apart of the MOVE program for 6 month and prove that you are going to try. I think they require a 5% weightloss during the 6 months. Depending on your doctor and the MOVE people you may get your surgery right after you "graduate". There are only 12 VA hospitals that perform the surgery and one is the VA Medical center in Charleston, S.C. Not sure what any of the others are.

I have an appt. on the 20th and will ask to be put in the MOVE program and for the surgery. Fingers crossed!

Va Fee is money paid by the VA to tother hospitas ot health care providers to perform services not done at the VA. In order to be eligible, va must be your sole health insurer

NDN_RN, If I were to call my VA, who would I talk to to find out who does our surgery? I know the VA's in Tenn. do not do them.

Also, my husband has insurance for the family but it does not cover WLS. Do you think I can still get it through the VA?

I would talk to my PCP first about wls. They can get the clinics casemanager to find out. I would also go see the benefts coordinator to see if fee would apply given you are covered by another insurer, even if they don't cover wls.

Move is a requirement, probably cardiology, endocrine and gen surgery consults too, but i guess it depends on the surgeon and pcp

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
