I had surgery with Dr. Rod and I thougt that he was great. I would do it again. I am scheduled for a fill appointment with him next week. He was so nice and really took time to talk with you before the procedure. I am also from the Houston area.

See Mexican Bandsters post # 13725. The lady died, which is extremely unusual.

She surely made some big mistakes in not seeking help sooner, but it also sounds as if that last fill from Dr Rodtiguez, without fluoro, sent a serious situation over the edge. It sounds like she was about ready to erode, and a fluoro would have found it and prevented her death.

I've heart from quite a number of people who had port infections and port flips, (more than the average, I think) requiring more expensive surgery. Ask on The Mexican Bandsters board for more.

I believe Dr Rodriguez is one of the very few doctors who do not suture the port down, perhaps leading to mor flips and turns maiking the post not able to be filled.

Everyone says he is very nice though, and his coordinator Barbara is too. But I guess "nice" is only part of it. Renee

Yes, actually I had surgery by him on Monday. Everything went extremely well. My port is sutured. I have two other friends who had surgery by him in November and are doing extremely well. They are following up with one of our local surgeons here and have each had fills. When fluoro was used for the fills, the local surgeon told them that their placements and ports were "perfect"....so thats all I know. Barbara is a dream and a huge support. The hospital staff and nurses were fabulous....very professional and pleasant. We never had to ask for a thing. They were in the room at the very minute pain meds, antibiotics, etc..were due with no delay. My incisions look very good. I'm taking my Toradol and antibiotic and on my liquid phase so far with no problems. The experience of myself and my friends was excellent. As longtime RNs and several from the perioperative phase in the hospital...we all had reservations and picked everything apart. None of us had complaints and were very impressed at many things. Hope this helps.

Caren or Neill1993 or Mamadiggs or others using Dr. Jose Rodriguez in Acuna

Would you guys mind giving me updates on your well being. Looks like

Tricare will only pay to disect me so I'm going to Mexico. I'm only a few hours

from Del Rio so Acuna is close enough.

I guess my question is "Are you still happy with Dr. Jose?" And do you all

have any suggestions that you think I might not have thought about? [Not

sure about how much sense that made] I did read in one of the forums

about one of his patients dying, something to do with a fill.

I hope I put this in the right place. Thanks

Sue

Susan, I am doing great and extremely pleased. I have 3 other friends here that also went to Dr. Rod. We are all very happy. Even though we had our surgeries in November and February....he is still available to us by phone as is his assistant Barbara. She just helped us with something recently. We think they are both great. Being in the medical field...I know that all surgeons have mortalities or patients that don't do well. After 25 years in the business, I don't know of many who don't or haven't...if they tell you otherwise...I'd worry.

I don't know all of the circumstances with that particular patient. All of us who are morbidly obese have risk factors and some more than others. Surgery always has risks, but so does morbid obesity, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and diabetes. The choice is personal, but our experience was nothing but positive.Caren

I did! I highly recommend him! I am going back to him for my fills even though it is a 6 hr. drive (we make a weekend out of it). There is a group at yahoo.com for his patients and you can find out lots of information about him.

He is very caring, his nurses are awesome. He is VERY accessible my phone. Call him if you haven't already. Here is his website. http://www.joseband.com/

He is awesome!!!

I live near Corpus Christi and decided on Dr. Rodriguez, across from Del Rio, Texas. My hospital experience was very good, he sent me home with a full course of liquid antibiotics and pain meds (never needed them).

Barbara L of San Antonio drives people to Del Rio and stays with them during surgery and afterwards, and arranges for the hotel and such. She does so much teaching on the way down and the way back. She has care packages of foods safe for the first days until you can get what you need (if you haven't yet).

Fills are a bargain once you get to San Antonio. Barbara picks you up at the airport or nearby hotels, or drive straight to her house for safe all-day parking in her driveway. You pay her $25 and she takes care of you all day - including lunch after the fills and then pharmacy and tourist shopping! And the fills are done under fluoroscopy (you get to watch it all) and are only $100. You can be on your way home within a few hours.

Dr. Jose Rodriguez in a Gastro-Intestinal surgeon, has been installing bands for over 8 years, is multiply boarded and certified. His website is http://www.JoseBand.com He charges $6800 for the surgery, last time I checked.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
