When I started this journey and finally set a surgery date I was 265 lbs. Today I weighed myself and I'm 279. I'm so depressed. My surgery isn't till July 11. I started low carb today and I hope I make it to a low carb lunch. I tried low fat yesterday and didn't make it. I feel like my stomach is a bottomless pit. I can't wait for this surgery!!!!

Any advice?

You can start doing some type of physical activity like walking to speed up your weights loss :) At least 30 minutes a day. You can start practicing eating healthy Snacks. You can do it slowly as you get use to it. Also do some research on Protein Shakes, you might like something else after surgery because for some people the tastes buds changed, but it won't hurt to start from now.

Congrats!! My birthday is on July!! Great month to get sleeve yay!

Do you have a primary doctor seeing you through this? Mine put me on one month of appetite suppressants so I could stay focused on the pre surgery diet. Honestly it only took me about ten days on them before I was settled into the routine. Keeping the extras in case I have a bad day before surgery date .

Liliana is right about the Protein shakes helping too. I stayed hungry on sugary liquid diets like Slim Fast, but I'm on Matrix now and they keep me full for hours. I also use Myfitnesspal and write down EVERYTHING that I eat. That has been a huge motivator. I'm down 11lbs in two weeks and have 5 more to lose before surgery April 9.

Thanks for the responses!

I am self pay and I am traveling to SC for the surgery so I'm pretty much by myself. I do have phentermine and was going to take them just to give me some sort of help but I thought that it was not good to take with an upcoming surgery but since my surgery is so far down the line, I wonder if it would be okay to take the pills for a month at least. I have my first phone consultation with the surgeon on the 29th so I will ask him then. In the meantime i can already tell low carb is going to fail too. My stomach just never feels satisfied!!! I never get full!! Is this normal!????

hi minismom

sorry for your weight gain, BUT don't worry. don't beat yourself up over it.

My WLS 12/15/11 - i considered the beginning of the month my funeral, and i went crazy on wild and nutty things to eat, cuz i figured i would never be able to eat them again, or in very small quantities. I did gain weight, but i was having the WLS in a couple of weeks. so i figured.... Was treating the world like it was going to end tomorrow.

i wasn't required a pre-liquid or anything diet., i wish i were. I really didn't take the time before surgery seriously enough, and try to lose some weight, Some others do the same....wrong.....but mistake is done and over with. Can't change whats already happened.

You on the other hand are so wisely aware of what happened with you gaining weight. You'll do better. Don't kick yourself for gaining -you'll probably lose the weight and more before WLS Surgery is not til July. I know you will work hard and probably lose some weight will come off before the WLS. Regardless, like i said, its over, can't change, sounds like you will do great.

See you around the site in preparation for WLS

July will be here before you know it.

Best Wishes

Congrats on your pending WSL

kathy

I would try and start trying the Protein Shakes to see which one that you like the best. I would start to cut down on the carbs and eat mostly Protein, veggies and fruits. Also if you are able to exercise even if it just walking start and do it at least 5 days a week. I know that this seems like a long time until your surgery but you will make it and soon be on your way to a new life.

Best to you and your journey

Eat like you already have the WLS surgery, meaning, eat Proteins, veggies with a little starches. Eat half of what you are eating and you will loose weight. Cut out all the breads, pasta's, and rice's. Or at least cut down on them. You can do this and it's gives you a head start for after surgery because your mind set is changed. ;)

I had some food funerals after I scheduled my surgery date. Fortunately, I didn't have much time to gain weight. I also had a two week pre-op diet where I lost 10 lbs. so my food funerals didn't do much damage. Now, nearly 7 months post-op, I can eat anything I want but in very tiny quantities so I didn't have to say goodbye any type of food. I do tend to eat a high Protein, somewhat low carb diet now because the carbs don't sit as well as other food.

What has worked for me, if you can do it, is to eliminate the tempting foods from the home. If it's not there, you can't eat it. Then fill your cupboards and fridge with foods that are tempting but healthier. The Protein will satisfy your hunger. I large grilled chicken breast, or even two if you are really hungry, is going to give you that satisfied feeling for a long time as you digest it. Before the surgery, when I was dieting, I use to "pig out" on healthy food so I could have that full feeling. I needed that full feeling for some reason. Go to town on a giant salad. LOL

Don't be hard on yourself. You are taking steps to a healthier you and July will be here before you know it.

Up your Water intake as well. Often, especially pre-surgery, we eat because we are thirsty, not hungry. Drink Water, Decaf tea, decaf coffee, sf non-carbonated drinks. Those will get you used to what you're supposed to do post-surgery. Also, when I did do Atkins and lost weight, I found that the fewer carbs I ate, the faster the weight came off. Of course, even that was nothing like the rate I've dropped weight since surgery, but it was still pretty fast.

On Atkins, a typical day was an egg mcmuffin from mcdonald's without the muffin, lunch would be a hamburger patty, and dinner was usually a grilled chicken breast with some cottage cheese and a small salad with very little dressing. I dropped weight quickly...of course, I gained it back even faster once I slipped, but that would get your weight down before surgery. Lots of water/liquids and, between eating like this and the water, I wasn't hungry.

Start taking Vitamins now, as well. Especially B12. For me, the B12 is like a daily energy boost!

Good luck! :)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
