1 Full Year Post Op... The Real Test Of Time.

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I wanted to touch base with you all... because I can! ;) On Thursday I will be 18 months post op. One and one half years exactly. Yay! :) I'm happy.

Yup, that about sums it up right there.

Here's something I've learned and I think by sharing this bit of knowledge it might help some of you who might be struggling mentally with figuring out how - when - where - what - why's with the Post Op life of a VSG patient.

Notice the word "patient"... because seriously, you will never find this more of a virtue than after you have your surgery. This journey IS!! NOT!! EASY!! You're going to have so many ups and downs you won't know where you're headed sometimes. It's ok, and it's normal to feel confused by a lot of things! That's why this forum is so valuable, all of us pre-oppers and post-oppers coming together to offer support and some great advice.

Here is something to look forward to though... rather than become fixated on how much one will lose on the first month out, or for that matter 6 months... concentrate rather on how your life will look IN ONE YEAR from the date of your surgery.

You're going to have a Santa's List worth of NSV's, likely you will have cleaned out your closet and replaced all your clothes 2 or 3x over. Some people (for example my own Mom) will pass you right up and not realize that you're YOU... You're going to be bombarded with folks coming up and either congratulating you and/or asking you how you did it. You will probably get a little embarrassed by some comments. You won't need to buy your clothes in the Bigs & Talls anymore. Your shoes are going to fit like they should. You will be able to walk and workout with the greatest of ease and without much pain. Likely you will begin to feel more comfortable in larger crowds... and (if you're single) you might feel more empowered to flirt with others. You will fit nicely in stadium seats, in an airplane without extenders, chairs with arm rests... you will also be able to cross your legs like second nature. Your Before & After photos won't even look like you!!

These are only a handful of all the wonderful things you WILL experience at one year out... that you will still be dreaming of at one month.

Patience. It's THE #1 asset to have in this whole process.

:) Have a great day everyone!

Thanks for that Irene! I definitely needed it today.

I think this week is going to be my first "stall". I managed to avoid it at three weeks and have lost about 4lbs per week steadily since surgery (six weeks), so I'm over the moon with my progress! But, its still hard to see that scale get stuck.

Your advice is just in the nick of time to remind me of what my surgeon said, "Don't worry about the scale day to day or even week to week, its about monthly trends."

I know I'm going to be a completely different person in a year, looking back on this moment and smiling at how, once again, I got myself worked up over nothing.

Your Surgeon is a very smart man! :) I know it's hard to remember these things when you're going through it. I went through it and it was hard for me. I only wish I'd seen a post like this back then.

One year from now, you will be a completely different person, and you WILL look back and say... wow!! What DID I get so worked up over? LOL ;) I speak from first person experience.

Thanks for the "down the road look." We get hung up on scale feedback and time periods too much I think. There will be a year later, 2 years later, etc.. I look at the amount of food I eat and know that there is no way I will not reach my goal regarless of any stall times I encounter. We have years of being lean and mean ahead!

I truly needed to read this today! Thank you!

My one month is tomorrow and after my initial -11lbs my first 9 days, I haven't lost anymore the past almost three weeks.

I have my nut telling me she's sees I'm doing verging correct in it and exercise and yet my dr said -1-3lb at least a week is normal.

So to lose none is discouraging!;(

But again, I say the same thing every night before bed.... It'll get easier every day and less will be intolerable and less will be painful in one month, as one month ago this week was hell and pain like I've never felt. (& I've had four kids)!;-)

Yes, to look towards the future is all I can do and just stay positive everyday that this 'diet' is one that will work!!!! :-)

Hi TeamBrown, that 1-3 Lbs per week is based on average. Some weeks you won't lose, some you will lose a lot. :) Hang in there!!!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
