???s - Doctors in Houston - UHC - 2nd insurance - qualifying

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on 3/8/2006 & can honestly say that I have NO complaints. I feel that if I were in Dr Spiegel's shoes I wouldn't accept checks either. For one, checks bounce, & believe it or not people are DISHONEST. Yes his bedside manner could be a little better then it is, but with as many cases as he handles each & every day he needs to cut a few things out. He is number 1 in the COUNTRY & who better to invade your body & do a good job then him. Dr Felix Spiegel is the only Dr that I would have trusted with my surgery! Please don't hate the man for trying to make those of US that WERE BIG & FAT, thin & BEAUTIFUL!

size8beauty,

I don't really write checks much so that part didn't bother me as much, however there are check verification systems out there such as verisign, I was more dissapointed that he didn't except credit cards.

I haven't seen anyone post that they hated him, however I do think that each one of us has different requirements. I am very appreciative of the comments made on this thread because I was trying to choose between Dr. Speigel and Dr. Spivak. By reading this thread, I was able to determine that Dr. Spivak was a better fit for me.

I am very happy to hear that the lap-band has been a total success for you. That is great to hear. I will be joining you soon. :)

I have UHC choice plus, I went to Dr St Laurent.(super nice) I didn't have to pay anything, just my $15 co-pay for doctor visits. Things may have changed since Oct./05 but it wouldn't hurt to try. He's on the corner of 1960 and 249, near Willowbrook Mall.

oh and he didn't measure me so say your 5'4" and put some quarters(a role) in your pockets and wear heavy clothes:)

That is great to hear! Mine would have been covered if I had selected the out of network option on my insurance.

I could wait and change it next year, but I am too anxious to start the process now.

Dr. St. Laurent is out of network for UHC. I was going to pay $2500 out of pocket, same as Dr. Spiegel. He is a great aftercare program from what I can tell. I did visit him and was going with him, but at last minute jumped back with Dr. Spiegel. There was an insurance snafu and I didn't want to postpone my surgery date.

I think most of them are good and its such an individual choice. You need to pick who you feel comfortable with. I wanted a surgeon who had a good track record for the surgery. Most of the complications resulting from lapband will have to be handled by other doctors, not the surgeons. So for me, the choice was easier.

Good luck to all of you.

I can tell you that after much research prior to my band, I went with Dr. Spivak in July of '05. Everything about him was fantastic and still is. I of course didn't have UHC at that time. My insurance did cover my surgery at that point and then in January of this year my company switched to UHC. I haven't really had any problems with my insurance at all. Several people at my office have had surgery since me and even though the majority of them have went with Spivak, I know of one or two who went with Speigel.

I wish you all the best in determining what is a "right" fit for you.

Dr Spiegel is also now BACK in network with UHC. He did my surgery in March of 2006 & I have already lost over 50 lbs. He is great, the #1 surgeon in the Nation with over 4000 surgeries performed. His phone # is 713-960-0003 he does require that u attend a seminar/consult with the him in order for him to determine if u qualify.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
