My surgery was 12/5/11. I've done amazingly well and have lost a little over 60 pounds and am completely thrilled with the weight loss....

However I'm having a miserable time with the mood swings. I'm not even sure how much of it is due to the surgery and losing weight and how much of it may just be because I am that much of a bitchy monster. A few people have mentioned how out of whack hormones get after surgery and I know that to be true for me because of PCOS issues.

I feel like a terrible person because I am BEING a terrible person. The littlest things set me off and it isn't nice, pretty or fair for my family and friends that are putting up with me. I was a fairly moody person prior to surgery but it just seems out of control. I see my surgeon this week for my 3 month follow up and I plan to talk to him about this, but I'm not sure he is the right person for this issue. His specialty is helping people drop pounds, not figure out emotions and mood swings.

And it's getting worse. Today I basically picked a huge fight with my entire family. At the time I was doing it I kept telling myself to stop talking but it just wouldn't stop and I didn't care because they had done X,Y, and Z. Everyone went their separate ways in the house and I ended up going to the gym with my cousins. I came back in a fantastic mood after a good work out- but everyone in my house is still in a foul mood and it's all my fault. So here I am in tears again with no one to blame but myself.

No one to talk to really about what is going on inside of my head, heart and body but you guys. And you guys are totally awesome, but I can't help but wish I had someone to talk to in real time about this. You guys can't put an arm around me and tell me it's going to be okay or really help me identify what the "trigger" is...

I think I need therapy. I never expected losing weight to make me feel this way.

Someone HELP! Please!

I did have the same problem as you in the begining. It might be due to the fact that you were an emotional eater, and you curbed you moods with food. Now the food is gone and you are finding it hard to cope without it. I found two ways to help. I replaced my food eating with exercise, it is a great way to get out those frustrations, and it helps you to drop the pounds too. Second I went to a psychiatrist and I got on some anti-depresants. I am now taking effexor every day, controled release, and I feel so much better because of it. I finally feel normal again. Please get some help, because the goal here is to make yourself happier, and healthier. Stress can be so counter productive, and cause you to hold onto the weight longer as well. Sending ((hugs)) your way! Good luck!

I don't know how old you are, but it might be a hormone thing. I am 54 and have been on the Vivelle patch for several years and would NOT be without it!! Well except for the week before my surgery scheduled this monday the 27th!! Melanie:)

I have heard that as you lose weight your hormones go haywire because they are stored in fat so as you burn fat you burn hormones.

Did you have these mood swings before the surgery? Where they this bad? I agree with seeing a therapist to help identify the triggers to your mood outbursts. It's hard to face our demons inside, but extremely important to help make the necessary changes to be successful. ;)

I'm 27. I know for sure hormones are playing a huge a part in this. (In the almost three months since surgery I'm on period #5!) I'm worn out from that as well!

I did have mood swings before surgery, but I feel like they were nothing compared to this! It really gets bad when I"m around my family. I love them to pieces but they drive me nuts!

I really just don't know what to do. I'm really hoping that my doctor will have some ideas. I'm not against taking anti-depressents but at the same time I don't like the thought of becoming dependent on medication. I sort of feel like once I stop the pills wont all the factors that made me depressed/feel that way to begin with still be there??

AHHHHH!!!

Thank you guys for your words. It does mean a lot knowing someone cares enough to try and help :)

I totally agree with Sassygirl about the anti-depressants. I went to my dr. before surgery because I was having horrible PMS (the moody part, not the pain), and originally asked her for Yaz...she instead gave me Prozac to take the two weeks before my cycle began, and it was like a miracle. I very, very rarely deal with the mood swings and anger anymore. Check into that! I don't suffer from depression.

I was taking an antidepressant before surgery.....actually 2 diffferent ones. I am now only taking one as I have been feeling so much better since my surgery and my current weight loss. I am going to stay on this one for now and we will see in a few months how things go. Might want to talk to your doctor about trying something that may be of help to you.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
