Anyone Have A Hernia Repaired? Still Hitting The Pain Meds After 9 Days

Recommended Posts

I'm 9 days out from surgery and still hitting the pain meds because of the hernia repair. Has anyone had that pain this far out? I know it's a relatively short amount of time since surgery, but everyone talks about ditching the meds after 2 days, yadda yadda.... Not me man....I got the refill and I'm using it. I figure there's a reason he gave me a refill, but I like to hear people say "oh yaaaa, I had the same thing!" Sooooo.......anyone?? Anyone?? Bueller?

"oh yaaaa, I had the same thing!" I think the pain from that was worst than the sleeve. I didn't give up my pain meds till about day 12. So hang in there hopefully you'll start feeling better soon.

Did your surgeon say it was due to the hernia repair? I had a hernia repair and I didn't use pain meds after I got home. (I'm not one to tough it out, like you I would have taken it for as long as necessary).

Yes, they said the location of the pain is where the hernia repair took place. I do think I'm getting intermittent gas bubbles near the area that aren't' helping any!

I had severe hernia repair, but never had any pain or complications from it. So sorry you are. Hope it heals soon.

My surgeon said they repaired a small hernia when they did my sleeve. I'm 9 days out and I haven't used pain meds since day 3. Everyone is different and maybe your hernia was more complicated to repair.

I had a hernia repaired and it is the only reason I used the pain meds.

I had a hernia repair and did not really need meds past a few days. However, I did have pain for almost a month out. I would describe it more like "a stitch" especially if I took a deep breath. But, again, for me, it did not require pain meds. It was more of a annoyance/discomfort. Everyone is different though. And if your hurting, take the meds!!! I understand our bodies heal much better when we are not under the stress of pain. That's why surgeons always recomment to stay on the med regimen even if you're not thinking you need them... they tell you it's worse if you let the pain hit. So hang in there! Hope you begin to feel better soon!!!!! It's an adjustment, but it's worth it!!!

I had the hernia repair done during sleeve and only used the drip pain med at the hospital after my walks. 2 days later I was home and didn't take any more pain medication because of fear of Constipation from tylenol w/ codeine. I wish you a speedy recovery and keep drinking fluids! GL

I had hernia repair and I got the refill on my pain med and used part of it. Everyone is different. I felt like a wimp after seeing so many people say they didn't need pain meds or only used a day or two, but in the big picture it's such a little thing on the road to recovery. Your comfort is what's important. So what if others didn't need it.

Taking pain meds a few more days than most has not affected my success or healing at all. At nine months out I'm nearly at my personal goal and I've had a normal BMI since before 6 months out. I can eat just about anything I want too (as far as spicy, sweet, etc.)

I had the hernia repair too and was just like you. On pain meds and in some serious pain for about two weeks. I took the oxycodone for awhile cause it was so uncomfortable when trying to sleep. Then transitioned to toradol, but had complications so I had to stop taking it. BUT, here's the thing, turns out I was moving around too much and the doc told me to limit it to just normal, walk around the house (i was walking a little, not much, but a little on the treadmill.) Coincidentally, I stopped walking on the treadmill AND stopped taking the pain meds at the same time and the pain went away. I really limited my activity though. The internal doc thought the pain was from the hernia repair, the surgeon thought it was from the muscle he cut....either way...it went away when I stopped moving so much. Hope this helps and hope your pain goes away.

Good to know...good to know....

I think everyone's experiences are just so vastly different, so I'm just glad to hear a couple similar cases.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
