When Is Too Soon To Get Pregnant?

Recommended Posts

hi I am new to the post op world only had surgery a week ago! My main objective with having the surgery was go loose weight and get healthy so I can get pregnant. My husband and I have been trying to have a baby for going on 5 years now with no luck! No fertility dr would treat me until I lost weight as being 278 lbs was, to them, clearly the reson I could conceive. I never ovulated before surgery even when taking ovulating drugs. While the the doctors all say that you need to wait a year to a year and 1/2 I have been reading that many pregnancies seem to be fine sooner than that. I am anxious to start trying 6 months out if safe as I want my grandmother to be be able to meet her great grandchild before she passes from her kidney disease. I can't help but feel like it would be selfish of me to try before the dr give the green light but I don't think she will make it that long. Any advice would help.

I don't know all the ins and outs of this topic as I am already done having children but my surgeon asked me if I was planning to have any more children and once I told him that we were done he went on to say that it would be fine if I wanted to have more but he would want me to wait at least a year before getting pregnant after surgery. We didn't go into the details of the reasons not to get pregnant earlier than that so I can't help there but this is what my Dr. told me......

My instructions from the surgeon say to avoid pregnancy for 18 months. He says that during the first 12 months, it can be very dangerous for you and the baby and may result in birth defects. I know this is not good news for you, but don't risk your life or that of your unborn children. It would be far more devastating to your grandmother if something were to happen to you or your baby.

Its very important that you listen to what your surgeon says. There's a reason they give the 12-18 months timeframe. You don't want to have a baby that has been starved of nutrients. Its worth waiting for to have a HEALTHY pregnancy, a HEALTHY baby and a HEALTHY mom. Take your time.

I have a very strict 12 month wait that I will absolutely be abiding by (in fact i will be waiting 18 minths just to be extra safe) which is a huge concession for me bc I suck at following physicians directions.

I had the sleeve by Dr. Aceves on 01/13/12. I spoke with him, his internist and his OR nurse- all separately/ individual conversations about getting pregnant after VSG because the primary purpose of this surgery for me, was to reach a healthy weight, get pregnant, have a healthy pregnancy and return to a healthy weight and maintain it. All three of them gave me the same exact answer 8-12 months, if all excess weight has been lost and in maintenance. I don't know if they would give the same advise, as every situation is different. I started off with a BMI of 31 (5'4 and 190lbs). That being said, I should reach goal by 6 months, have two months of maintenance and begin working on pregnancy after 8 months from surgery. Dr. Aceves did recommend meeting with my selected OB before becoming pregnant to have blood work done, increase Vitamins (if needed), and voice any concerns, etc. I plan to do this in June 2012.

My surgeon said to wait 9 months to a year. But, I accidentally jumped the gun and he now says I'll be fine. Had VSG in July 2011 and am now 10 weeks pregnant. My OB is not concerned at all. I reached my goal weight of 141 pounds (started at 183ish) and am now considered in "maintenance." This is my 3rd pregnancy---I was a chubba chubba for the first two pregnancies. I'm was having issues with nausea and zero appetite about four weeks ago due to morning sickness but my OB prescribed Zofran (anti-nausea med) and that has helped immensely. The weird thing is that when I take the medicine and get my appetite back, I seem to have less restriction than before I was pregnant. It's strange. And kinda scary because I don't want to gain too much. I now weigh 143. FWIW, a good friend of mine had gastric bypass several years ago and got pregnant with TWINS within six months of surgery. She LOST about 30 pounds while pregnant. Yes, LOST weight. Her twins were born totally healthy, normal sizes, were not in the NICU, no problems whatsoever, and after giving birth she lost ANOTHER 40 pounds before even leaving the hospital or something crazy. Long story short----she was at her goal weight within hours of delivering her twin girls. They are now 5 years old and typical sassy fun 5 year old girls. So I'm not worried, they are monitoring my nutrient levels and they've been perfect (so far). :)

I'm guessing because you had much less to lose than others and have been maintaining for a while that there would be less concerned - anyone whose in the losing phase should NOT even think about getting pregnant. There is nothing safe about it in the losing phase.

Congrats on your pregnancy!

This is a good thread for me...I was told 2 years and I actually had to prove I was using reliable birth control prior to surgery. When i went to my 1 year post-op the doctor asked if I was going to have any more children, which surprised me. I am currently unsure whether or not I want any more kids. We have three and I have always wanted 4 but...I am VERY worried about being able to get back to my goal weight after wards. It feels a little selfish to say that but why would I have gone through surgery and all the work I did (yes, I think it has been work) to get me to this spot. Curious to hear from sleevers who have gotten prego and what happened afterwards. The only example I have to go on is a by-pass friend who got prego at 1 year out and she never made it to her goal pre pregnancy so she is still stuggling to get back to her pre pregnancy weight. Not encouraging to me.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
