More Than Cardio Needed..help!

Recommended Posts

Hey all :smile1:

So i have various cardio workouts down.. but I am sure I need to add strength training of some sort into my workouts and not just jog/run/walk/jog/run/walk etc .. but I have NO Idea what to add and still continue to lose. I think my body is getting to use to the treadmill.. no matter if im inclining or not.

Any advice? I dont want to go pay 90/session for a trainer if I dont have to!

Thanks:)

You can purchase videos to workout in your home for strength/resistance training. That would be a start.

The Insanity Workout is gruelsome. You can download it on line for pretty cheap. It will cause you to sweat your butt off. It really works for my son. ;)

yes, my Dr told me upfront to do weights... this can be done with canned goods, or gallon jugs of water.... cardio only burns calaries while you do them you can burn calories up to 6 hours after lifting weights....... it gets easier the more you do them..... good luck on your journey....

there's a beach body program called slim in 6 - it is really good for stepping you up. It uses both cardio and strength training.

A few options:

1. most machines at the gym have a diagram on them to show you how to use them. Pick a weight that is about 70% of the highest weight you cant move, and do 3 or 4 sets of 10 or so repetitions. Pick one machine to do arms, one for chest, and one or two for legs. This should be a good start.

2. sign up for a class at your gym that uses weights. There should be plenty, and if you walk by the class area and see them using barbells or dumb bells in their routine, check the schedule to get the name of the class, then go to one that fits your schedule.

3. get the p90x videos off the net (a session with a trainer might be cheaper), and give the body weight exercises a try. If you can get through the entire p90x program, you are in better shape than most people in this country.

Best of luck on your journey!

I like the Body Pump classes at my gym. Great workout to music with weights that targets all the muscle groups. I also do a Cardio Scupt class that is half cardio, half weights, but if you are already getting plenty of cardio, I think the Body Pump class is a good choice.

A good basic weight training program is outlined on the "body for life" site. I'm not a proponant of the products but the program is a good approach that alternates days and major muscle groups accross a two week schedule.

With a modest investment in dumbells and a simple bench, you can accomplish a lot.

Bodybuilding.com is a good resource for putting together workouts and exercise demos.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
