Inevitable "where's My Restriction?!?!" Freak Out Post

Recommended Posts

I dont want to be a buzzkill "which I usually am lol".

Are you not scared to put to much pressure on your new staple line to cause a burst? I think since I studied improvised field survival and I know how to make an IV I will plug my arm before pushing my luck.

Thats just my foresight. Not saying you will have a leak but do you see how easy it is for people to selfinflict a leak? I am just saying dont push your luck to far

(null)

This seems a bit extreme. You aren't going to get a leak from too much Fluid intake. The staples used to suture your sleeve are a strong grade that wont rust or deteriorate. People get leaks from lifting more than they should, trying to exercise too soon before they are fully healed or improper technique on the surgeons behalf but not from drinking Water. The risk you run is stretching your sleeve BUT after just 2 - 3 days you're not going to do too much damage. You have to be habitual. It's typical to not feel restriction in the liquid stages especially, if , as someone else stated you aren't gulping. Gulping gives you horrible gas and makes you bloat which makes you feel restricted quicker. The worst thing would be to become dehydrated. That's grounds for hospitalization as far as my surgeon is concerned because that will cause a snowball effect on other body systems not to mention the horrible fatigue it will bring on.

Just to give you an idea: I alternate between having at least 4 oz (at minimum) of skim milk, Protein Shake and Water throughout the day, then for meals I am having broth or a pure Soup and I have maybe 2-4 tablespoons... I got adventurous and made a Tomato herbal cream soup and it was so good I ate the entire half cup and couldnt eat the rest of the day Lol.

I just re-read part of your post and didn't realize you were eating 11oz of pureed Soup this soon out. That stuff will not go right through you (especially with Protein powder mixed in)....you need to measure that type of stuff out. No more than 1/2 cup per meal at this time.

Other clear fluids will go right through you - but still want to probably drink no more than 4oz per 15 mins.

The soup I was eating wasn't pureed... it's a very thin/watery soup from a carton that just tastes like a lot more than broth does. I did definitely feel full (uncomfortably so) for a while after I finished that. I certainly haven't done it again.

I think that maybe I'm starting to get more feeling back in my stomach in general, because I've noticed feeling uncomfortable more easily from shakes or Soups.

I went from barely eating 200 calories on my second day after surgery to surpassing 800 calories on my third day (yesterday). I'm intentionally aiming for between 600-700 today (everything is planned out for the rest of the evening).

Truth is, I feel like I could probably just continuously graze on these liquid stage foods

all day without having a problem. I got through 11 ounces of smooth curried red lentil Soup (with unflavored Protein powder mixed in) last night for dinner before I had a sensation of maybe having gone too far. That was over the course of a half hour, maybe 45-minutes. I don't feel like I have to eat, but everyone is so adamant about constantly getting food and fluids in, I feel like I should be putting something in my mouth most of the time... at least while I'm still healing!

I have no problem getting in two Nalgene bottles (32oz each) of Water in a day in addition to this.

I'm not set to move on from this stage of the diet until after my post-op follow-up appointment with my surgeon on February 7th. That's fine, I don't mind staying on the full liquids until then.... I just wish I could experience the restriction to reassure myself that this really did happen and really will help me get to where I want to be!

I know this subject has been brought up a hundred times... I guess I'm just looking for those same reassurances fired off in my direction. :)

Wow that soon after surgery, you should still be on no more than 4 oz. at a time? Be careful of your intake. I am on regular foods now and was just moved up to 8 oz. at a time ( although i can't get it all in). Creamed soup sound like it should be in the full liquid stage, but not on Clear Liquids. Please be careful!

We all have to keep in mind, no two sleeves are alike. And I believe there is some variation in bougie size used which will give some patients more less forgiving sleeves. Following my surgeons orders I was allowed IV liquids for the first 24 hrs preceeding surgery, after that clear liquids. Once I was shown to have tolerated those I was allowed a normal liquid diet which includes hot cereals like cream of wheat, as long as they are a Soup like consistency, Water, Protein Shakes and cream and broth Soups. All of my soups have been a very clean puree and I have had no problems. However once I incorporated the creamy soups and soup bases into my diet I did notice that I feel fuller much quicker. I average 2-4 tablespoons before feeling full and this morning I ate two tablesppons of greek yogurt and felt stuffed.

I know. I guess I am thinking how I could have consumed 11 oz. at a time so soon, since I can't even get in 8 oz. yet!

I was cleared for shakes the day I left the hospital (they made sure I could tolerate the Protein drinks). After I woke up from anesthesia, I was given a one ounce medicine cup of Water and an hour in which to drink it. It took minutes, with no pain. I feel like my sleeve has been very forgiving thus far. I suspect that may catch up with me, although it's not like I've been sitting here chugging half gallons of fluids at a time.

I'm looking forward to feeling like I couldn't possibly stomach more than 2 tablespoons of something. Anything. It's what I was expecting, after all!

I know the feeling ! I can drink so easy it's scary. But when I went for my 1st post op visit the Dr. said sounds like I'm doing just fine! It is weird how each person reacts sooo different bc my co worker had her sleeve 2 weeks before me and she still can barely eat or drink anything. Same surgeon and I"m assuming same bougie sz...he said he has a system that works very well and everyone gets the same thing. I am on full liquids now but I can still drink an 8 oz pretty thin Protein Shake in about 10 min. or so. I hope when I get to more solid foods I get the restriction feeling too!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
