My dr. said absolutely NO to diet coke or pepsi because it has caffeine in it which acts as a diuretic and is not good. You want to drink Water and more water and keep well hydrated. I wouldn't touch anything with caffeine in it, but that's just my opinion. Luck to you. BTW my 7 day diet was strictly Carnation Instant Breakfast and water...no yogurt or anything like that. I did have broth one night because I just simply needed something hot in my tummy. That 7 days was really really tough. I got the band on July 18 and was doing amazingly well till today when I realized I'm hungrier than I have been since the surgery, which means the swelling has gone down and I really need to keep a handle on things till I get my first fill on Aug 30. Buckle down hard. I know you can do this pre-op diet.

I don't buy that. People say alot of things... tin cans give you cancer, aspartame will kill you... cell phones give you brain tumours..

whatever anyone says, I'm going to stick to thinking that drinking a diet coke is less likely to make me gain weight than a real coke.

Now, whether you will be able to comfortably drink any after surgery is anyones guess. I don't know what the TLBC says about carbonation. I think someone said that Joffe and Yau say 2 different things. Guess it's up to you. I can handle it. (not that I have it much anymore. I used to drink at least a few cans a day) It doesn't do anything weird to me. But I still make sure I flatten it a little before drinking.

Are you drinking more Water now than usual? If you are, maybe try not drinking for a few hours before bedtime. I always have a last minute scramble to try to drink all the Water I should have drank during the day, at night, so I'm up a couple times during the night too!

Kim please remember that your to do whatever TLBC has told you, everything on here is just our opinion, it is important to do whatever your surgeon wants. Having said that, here's my opinion, LOL. Drinking Water, alot of water is good, before, after and during. I think that peeing alnight should be looked at in a good way, remember your cleaning out your liver, and without a lot of water carrying the garbage out of your body, thats not good. I also think that water is better than any pop. I would always pick water over it, but I think your dr. said it was okay so you should treat yourself to it now and then for a treat.

I wouldn't worry to much about the caffeine thing, your doing your diet well, your losing weight, I wouldnt worry.

YOUR DOING GREAT, KEEP GOING!

hey cloe thanks for the support, I am frustrated though this morning with a pound up and sick of this already BUT I will keep at it.

I did Crystal Light during my pre-op, but again, different surgeon. I'm sure it would be ok though. If it helps you get your Water in, that's good. You SHOULD be drinking at least 8 'glasses' a day... which is 64 oz. or about 2 litres. I try to drink 3 liters (I use Nalgene bottles as my gauge)... and I find it hard to drink much of anything else, when you drink all your water AND try not to after or during meals.

so stupid question then.....but does drinking Water first BEFORE you eat help to fil your stomach,,pre op and also post. AND honestly what is the answer to after surgery you wait how long after you eat and how soon before you eat?

Drinking before you eat... I think it's just so you get Water in before you have to NOT get Water in after you eat. I think also, if you're hydrated enough before you eat, you're not going to feel like you NEED something while you're eating.

And, do you mean how long before and after are you supposed to drink and not drink? If thats what you mean, it's 'supposed' to be 15-30 minutes before eating: stop drinking, and don't drink 30min-1hour after eating. I drink up until I eat though... :|

You are supposed to be keeping well hydrated on Water. Also, this is a good time to wean yourself off pepsi, coke or any carbonated beverage because you can't have them after lap banding..... I hope you are aware of that one. They are a no-no forever unfortunately. I also was a fanitic about my diet soda but took the week before to switch over to Water with Crystal Lite or Sensation in it. I have to admit I miss the diet pops, but not bad enough to start drinking any. My surgeon says they give you horrible gas, and it just isn't worth it. Drinking pepsi is defeating the purpose of your pre-op diet. You need to get Protein in you. I was on Carnation Instant Breakfast, and after surgery I've switched to Isopure which I ordered on line. If you don't quit the pop's now, it will be even more difficult after the banding.

Good luck to you,

If you have never been one to drink lots of Water, you will find that for the first few weeks you pee like crazy...Your body is flusing out toxins. After awhile, you can drink the same abmount and not have to go any more than you did before you were "hydrated". A good rule of thumb is to drink BEFORE you are thirsty. Once you are thirsty, your body is telling you that it is dehydrated.

As for caffeine and carbonation, there are a few reasons to stay away from them:

1) caffeine can cause acidity in the gastric track, which you do NOT want with a LAP band.

2) Caffeine can stimulate the hunger response, leading to overeating

3) Caffeine inhibits the absorbtion of Vitamin D (a bone building vitamin). As you are eating less food, and perhaps not getting as much Vitamins through your food, any malabsorbtion is not good.

4)Sugar and artificial sweetners cause the same insulin response in the body, leading to increased hunger.

5) They have ZERO nutritional value, and take up valuable space in your stomach where you should be putting nutritious, healthy food that can help your body...

The long and short is (and this is from a Coke addict who IS quitting), Diet drinks only fool you into thinking they are a better alternative....Most of us got fat by not making good decisions for ourselves, in regard to food. If your doctor says it is a nono, it is that. After LAP surgery, it is the time to face our addictions to food and drink, and find new healthier ways to eat and drink.

I wish you lots of success...and agree about the Crystal light..I use a TEENY bit in Water so it gives it just a slight bit of flavor and makes it easier to get down......I also bought a juicer, and it is FABULOUS!!! I recommend it if you are not lazy.

Good luck!! :biggrin1:

You really shouldn't say that. Doctors are all over the place with the carbonation thing. Maybe her doctor thinks it's ok. It doesn't give ME horrible gas, but I'm not going to say "Drink your diet cokes all you want". Do what YOUR surgeon tells you, or what you're comfortable with doing.

It IS a good time to try to wean yourself off it though. I'm sure if you called the TLBC they'd tell you not to be drinking it now... because nobody wants us to have any fun. LOL. But really... if you can get out of the habit, and if you do (and are allowed to) later on, enjoy the odd one as a treat. I do still try to de-fizz 'em the best I can, when I do have something like that, but I don't go nuts with it.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
