Post-Op Vitamins & Weight Loss

Recommended Posts

Hi -- Curious to find out if not taking a multi-Vitamin can impact weight loss? I haven't been the best at consistently

taking mine. I was given the go ahead to take them starting week 3, and I'm just finishing up week 5. I'm not a fan of the flavor and leaves me feeling a bit icky after I take it. Curious to see what you guys thought, if there is any correlation between lack of Vitamins & weight loss .

I have an appointment with my DR on Thurs, so going to see what other options there are for Vitamins. The Bariatric Advantage berry flavor chewables are not the greatest if you ask me! Don't want to short myself nutrients, nor weight loss so eager to see what my other options are.

Eager to hear what you guys have to say.

My doc told me Calcium helps in the flushing out of fat cells, but I don't know about the rest of the Vitamins. I can't stand the Bariatric Advantage vitamins either. They almost disgust me, but I am getting used to them. I take them anyway.

Calcium is huge, as is B12. I would find one that you like - a liquid Vitamin that perhaps you could put in a shake or something may help.

I know your question is about Vitamins as it relates to weight loss, but I just have to add that the reason they have us on Vitamins isn't for weight loss. Our intake has been drastically reduced therefore, the nutrients our body is absorbing is also reduced. Early out, you really need to be taking the vitamins your team has recommended. I know some Drs require blood tests every 3 months to ensure you are getting what you need.

We're not taking vitamins for weight loss, but for health reasons.

If you don't like the chewables, my nutritionist allows me to take a softgel Multivitamin that I swallow (made by Nature Made). It's a complete multi that includes Iron, so I also take my Calcium separately from my multi (I take 2 multi a day and 1000 mg of calcium citrate - 500 in a.m. and 500 at bedtime - I take my one multi at lunch and one in evening).

I don't think not taking Multi Vitamins will impact your wt loss, but as Pdxman says they maybe neccessary for health. I can't stand them either. They make me feel nauseated and I can taste them all day. I've decided to stop and see what my test results are at my 3 month check up. If the results show that I'm deficient then I'll be convinced to keep taking them. I am still going to use the B12 shots though. I wish I could get all my Vitamins with a once a month shot!

I've wondered this too. I was worried about taking Vitamins in the first few weeks, so I ordered Celebrate ENS Protein drinks which have a Multivitamin, Calcium and some other stuff in them. I'm using them and supplementing what they don't provide. It's been a good way to get my multi and some calcium without having to force down chewables. I've noticed that I'm able to tolerate more tastes now than I was at first, so I'm about to branch out to the other supplements. I tried samples of many kinds and have ordered the ones that taste the best to me.

My hardest one is the Iron. I tend toward having anemia, but Iron supplements really disagree with me. Plus they tend to make me constipated -- yuck. (So that means another thing I have to take to deal with the side effects of the iron!) Wish there was a way around that.

I don't midn the flavor of mine so much, as remembeing to take them 4x a day. I am good with about 3 of them a day but regularly forget the 4th, and also have problems fitting the Calcium in 2 hours apart from the multi. I need an appt reminder or something. I also wish there were a Gummy bariatric Vitamin. I have opurity bariatric Vitamins on hand which I bought before meeting with her because i liked the fact that they were one a day. But my nut rattled off a list of things I would need to take a small supplement if I took them. However at this point, if I'm missing my 4th pill a few times a week, based on the differences in levels between the two of them, I might be better off with taking the one a day.

I had no idea calcium had a role in flushing out fat. Cool.

I'm hoping I can go back to my Nature Made multi-Vitamin since I can swallow pills (I assume everyone can?) or maybe try gummies. I know I've heard of some people taking gummies for their Vitamins, I think!

Will see what the DR says on Thursday.

Thanks everyone for your input.

The part of the stomach that makes intrinsic factor, which allows us to absorb Vitamin B-12 from food, is the part removed doing the sleeve. The part of the stomach that allows us to absorb Calcium is greatly reduced. On top of that, we are eating much less food, so we are getting fewer nutrients from what little we eat. The Vitamins aren't for weight loss; they are for life!

My Dr. told me I can swallow the bariatric Vitamins whole. No need to chew them. I can't get past the chalky texture! As for me, I have seen greater weight loss when religiously taking my vitamins. I am of the opinion that they just help the body run more smoothly.

I now take the liquid Multivitamins from costco.com. They come in a 2-pack and are more reasonably priced than other places. My NUT told us about them. I don't know if it's available in stores. I was very surprised at how quickly my order was filled, shipped and received. And the shipping was less than $2.

I take a Vitamin I get from the Health food store.. it is called "life's fortune" it is wonderful. It gives you lots of energy. I took the bottle to my doc and he looked it over and said it was fine to take them. I take 3 in the morning and it helps with energy. My daughter in law can take them and within hours can feel a difference in her energy level..it usually takes a couple of days before I "feel" more energized. It is not a chewable but a pill so you would have to be able to swallow pills.

In the evening I take 1 flintstone's chewable w/iron and it has a terrible after taste.

I also take the Bariatric Advantage Calcium soft chews. they are sooooo good it is like eating a dessert!!

Can someone please provide an example of what you take when? I don't recall being given a schedule of when to take what. I just take a multi Vitamin and a Calcium chew in the am with my ppi and then another multi vitamin and another calcium chew in the evening with a B-12 soft gel. Am I missing something or doing something wrong?

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
