Sleeve Secret? What Do You Say?

Recommended Posts

For those who are keeping your sleeve private. What do you say when out to lunch / dinner with friends, co-workers, business meetings... With the band even waiter/ waitresses say that's ALL your eating?

I have already used the "I am just getting over a bug" excuse at a restaurant. Although the people I was with knew about my surgery. I'm curious to see what others have to say to you, since I may experience the same problem. I do know that out of courtesy, it's always nice to ask for Water, just to fit in.

Yes, I have mastered the art of ordering Water and not drinking it during meals. I really don't like the taste of plain water so, it wasn't difficult. Before the band I used to drink iced tea but, at $2-$3 a pop, it wasn't difficult to give it up either. My weekly lunch costs went down over $10 a week.

I have told a couple of really worried looking waiters that I've had surgery. I've also used someone else's excuse of I had a big meal earlier. I even told one waiter that I am "working on losing weight" and had eaten my allotted calories for that meal.

Those who know me know that I don't count calories, but it's an excuse no one questions.

I have used those before. When I had gotten to my goal weight with the band (later gained it back), the excuse that I'm on a diet, people looked at me like I was crazy.

I have used the following excuses. I would like to try to get a complete list of excuses.

I've already eaten.

I had a big Breakfast.

I'm trying to lose weight.

I don't feel good/ stomach ache/ sick.

I have a tooth ache. (a couple of times, I really did have a tooth ache)

I've even said, I didn't care for the meal very much.

I'm not hungry.

Any more good excuses?

I would tell them that I want just something light and order a bowl of Soup. I do not feel that I need to explain my food choices to anyone and especially to a waiter or waitress. It is none of their business what I order or what I eat. If they continue to question my choices I would excuse myself and speak to the head person at the restuarant.

Well, when i have gone to Applebees, I have "shared" an appetizer with a male coworker and then ordered the french onion Soup, and then just eaten the liquid, and no one has questioned me. (If you share an appetizer with most men, they do not really pay attention if you just have 1 or 2 pieces). I have also ordered grilled chicken with salad, and then I ate the chicken and just cut up the salad in little pieces and left it. Again, no one has ever questioned me. When I go out to eat, I talk alot while the others eat, so by the end, they are mostly done and I have eaten what I need to, and that's it. If anyone asks about what I am eating (or not), I say "huh, what?" If they are so rude to repeat a question, like "is that all your eating", I say, "I 'm not hungry anymore". If they say anything else, I "joke" and say either, "boy you are REALLY that interested"? or "stop being a pain in the a**", depending who asks me. If I feel like it, and I'm at someones house, I just say I can't eat that I'm allergic or it gives me an upset stomach. I try not to get into lengthy discussions & I don't feel I need to explain anything to anyone. (But I think this is what turning 50 does to you!)

I eat in restaurant's alot and I have never had anyone ask me questions. I don't care if people know that I had this surgery, because everyone who knows me, knows I've had a surgery. In a restaurant, I'm not there to talk to the servers. I give them concise orders and always thell them that the food is delicious. If it's not delicious I do sent it back and they fix me a new plate. I love keeping everything simple....... ;)

I am pretty slim now so I don't get the comments much anymore but when I do I just say that I am a "small eater". When I first had my surgery and obviously WASN'T a small eaters (ha), I said something similar to the other posters..."oh, I have been snacking all day...not really hungry" or "just getting over a bug and don't have much appetite." My co-workers don't know about my surgery and they do know that I have lost a lot of weight so they chalk up my smaller portions to my "diet". Good luck...it will get easier!

Im not sleeved, just looking into it but im banded. Here are some band excuses I use

When asked why I’m not eating a lot I respond:

-I just ate – before I got here/ an hour ago/ a big meal earlier/ a snack before meeting with you/ because I was starving and now I’m kind of full

- This food – tastes a little strange/ is too spicy/is too hot/ isn’t that good/ is getting between my teeth

-I just ate too fast and some food got stuck

- I drank too much last night and ____ isn’t a good hangover food for me

- it’s too early/late for me to be eating

When asked why I am not drinking a lot or taking shots ( my fav!) I respond:

- I just – did a shot/ had a drink/ate and am super full

- I don’t have a lot of money to drink tonight

- I have to get up early tomorrow

- I drank too much last night and want to take it easy tonight

- I went out earlier with my coworkers and already feel too drunk

- I don’t like shots anymore after I got sick off of them a few months ago

- I have been drinking too much and want to give my liver a break

- I’m sick and my doc tells me not to drink with my meds

This is exactly what I always say! (most people never knew I had a failed band) And you are right, it DOES shut them up, FAST!!! :)

I went out to a restaurant recently, right before seeing the "Cavalia" show. I was thinking that my eating one little bit of a shared appetizer and some Soup would be noticed, but here is the funny... haha... I was at a small table with 3 other women (it was a big group and we were too late to fit at the main table) and it was like a who could eat the least contest. Good lord, I probably ate as much or more then the others. Weird.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
