Hey, All You December Sleevers...

Recommended Posts

How are you doing? What was your hospital experience? Do you have any tijps to pass along? My surgery is Dec. 26th in Buffalo NY. I can't wait to join the losers bench this month but I have to admit I am getting a little more nervous as the date gets closer. Tell me all about it.

Thanks

Lisa

Congrats lisa, Your gonna be fine.. i just got my sleeve 12-12-11 so im pretty new to this loser game too.. lol.. but i find that having a community of people that know exactly what you are going thru is the best help anyone could get.

My experience i live in sac and my surgery was in richmond its about 1hr 45min drive.. that was the hardest part about leaving the hospital.. your in pain and driving that long really really sucks.. lol..

In the hospital wasn't too bad i think everyone has there moments but for the most part the only thing that really bothered me was the gas. It was terrible cause i couldn't burp but as long as you make sure to get up and walk every few hrs you will be ok.

i couldn't take any pain meds while i was there because they just made me nauseous, but to be honest i wasn't in that much pain, it could be because im just used to having surgeries, but it really wasn't that bad. I was able to leave the next day as planned but be careful cuz if you can't pee on your own or handle drinking fluids they wont let you go home. I couldn't pee on my own at first, but that was because they pumped me full of pain meds.. lol. kinda a catch 22 but whatever.

the first couple of days back the gas was really the only thing that i have to complain about no pain other than that. I tried the gas x which kinda helped but not really i just had to keep moving and try to disperse the gas that way.. now i can have it come out the other end.. lol i know kinda grosse but you do what you gotta do. and now 8 days in the pain is gone most of the gas is gone and the only real problem i have now is drinking the required liquids that i need to.

and because i heal a lot faster than most my body already wants to move to the puree phase.

Anyways sorry that was so long.. but really good luck to you im sure you will do fine and if you have any questions there will always be some one here that wont mind answering.

Make up the list of meds you want your doctor to send you home with even if you don't need them. Mine wrote me a script for nausea Patches to wear behind my ear, prevacid solutabs (for heartburn), Lortab elixer (pain) and told me to get Milk of Magnesia for Constipation.< /p>

In the hospital speak up about what you need. The pain meds can make you nauseaous so ask for something for that. Walk, move (get that gas out!) They had me on so many IV fluids I couldn't help but pee. The pain was not bad at all (but I'm kind of a surgical veteran).

I had my surgery on the 19th and was discharged on the 21st. Good luck to you!

Hey mchez1986

Yes, Dr. Hoffman did my sleeve on 12/26 at Buffalo General Hosp. Everything went really well and I havent had any pain to speak of, except my left shoulder (which I guess is common due to the nitro gas they use during the procedure. I was up walking the hall a couple hours after surgery, slept pretty well that night and felt 100% the next day when I was discharged. I swear swallowing the barium, Yuck! for the leak test was the worst part of the whole thing. Dr. Hoffman is so great. Everytime I saw him, he would say " I just know you are going to do so well with your sleeve." and "You are going to have a great year" I am looking forward to going back for my follow-up this coming Tuesday to get rid of this pesky drain and see how much I have lost. Happy New Year to everyone.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
