Slowly But Surely.. But Slowly

Recommended Posts

Well, it's been almost 4 months since my surgery. I didn't have to do much in the way of pre-op so the weight I have lost is all from surgery. I am down 32 pounds. My start weight was just below 200 and now I am clearly Jennifer Lopez..lol I actually look rather 'normal,' I have no complaints and if I suddenly stopped losing weight and was stuck here forever I would be OK. At least I feel better about my self image. I am hoping that the hairs in my head stay put and that my skin finds it in it's heart to have a spring in it's step. At the ripe old age of 40 it still may have some elasticity although I get the strange feeling that the skin on my neck is not going to bother to cooperate. Since I am keeping this whole VSG thingy to a dull roar, not telling everyone I see, the slower weight loss is a blessing. I don't have to do much explaining, which is a relief. I think the slower weight loss may have something to do with the size I was when I started and with the amount of weight I had to lose. At this point I am at a weight that I was for about 10 years of my life(before having a child) My body likes this weight a great deal and getting below it will likely be slow. All I know is that when I put my jeans on after they have come out of the dryer I KNOW they are going to either fit or be getting a bit looser. No more dreading the thought of them shrinking(read as me gaining weight and blaming the jeans and dryer) When I sit down I don't have to pull my damn shirt out from a roll. Ya know? lol

So even though it is slow it is coming off. If anyone else is a slow loser please remind me to stop secretly wishing my ex-husbands new 18 year old girlfriend(whatever.. she is young)gains what I have lost. lol

Here's to all the slower losers... may the weight go away and never find its way back home!

:)

And remember... some of us who have lost weight quickly at the beginning will undoubtedly experience slower weight loss and stalls as we go along... I'm trying to prepare myself for that, so it was good to read your post.

Im right there with you girl! Its been almost 4 months and my weight loss is nonexistant this month. I did pull out a pair of 16's from the dryer this morning and they were loose right away!!!! No doing the jig to get them on.. they just slipped right on and now I need a belt to keep them up! So happy about that. I started out in a 20. I am going bra shopping this weekend for an inbetween size. I can tie the back in a knot to get it to fit...lol. Guess, I need a new size. I am hoping to be back in a 34c when I reach goal (135). I am a 40c right now but as I said, even on the tightest notch, it just hangs in the back and I feel the girls might fall out from under the bottom at any moment! I will take slow but sure because I am 43 and dont want my skin to sag too much... its already starting!

hi i would lose weight and gain it back, like many others.

my question is this (please don't get mad) I don't understand slow weight losses.

When i was in WW even if i only lost 1 lb. a week thats more than some of you for a month. The slow weight loss, does it have anything to do with our small stomachs now,

pouches?

i am pre-op WLS 12/15/11. So maybe i don't have any right to say this, its just a question ok?

Please no egg throwingsad_smile.gif thanx kathy

Hiya Kathy...

Don't worry, won't throw any eggs... they are too nice poached...lol

I am 18mths out now and experienced slow weight loss since Feb/March of this year. To be honest, I don't know why it is slow. It is what it is! What I do know is that, I have NEVER lost a lot of weight before; the most that I have managed is a merge 7lb!! and that took many months! The sleeve has been my only way of losing and I am currently maintaining with ease.

I just think that we are all different... some the weight will melt off, some it will be a steady but sure loss and some will struggle and fight for every pound lost. I am in the latter! However, regardless of speed, we are all losers. I suppose there are pros and cons to both!

More recently I see myself as a success, whereas back in the summer I didn't because I didn't reach goal by my year marker.

I will get on the wagon again in the New Year and reach goal, at some point, in 2012!

Good luck with your surgery and weight loss, may the demon of the stall leave you alone...lol...

take care!

No eggs from me. I think those that are slow losers have a very eficient metabolism. Their bodies go into starvation mode and figure out how to survive on the limited amount of calories they are ingesting. It is a survival mechanism from way back when humans experienced times of real famine. If you could survive on fewer calories, you lived longer.

Back when I did Modifast- I ingested 450 calories for 9 months. At some point, my body stopped losing weight. I figured my Irish ancestors would have been ones that would have survived the potatoe famines, if they hadn't decided to decamp to the USA.

I am getting frustrated at the slow weight loss. I do all the things I am supposed to so that's not it. I'm excercising some, but do need to do more than twice a week. I lost 15 pounds preop, then 5 pounds one week out, then 3 pounds, then 2 pounds, and last week a big 1 pound. This is my fifth week out and there's been no loss so I now understand what a stall feels like.

It really helps to read the other posts! Patience is not my best virtue.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
