Hi shelbys mom - I have had no problems at nearing 3 years post-op. No regrets either. Never an issue with swallowing and since I had surgery, I have no longer experienced acid reflux (which I had pretty bad prior). I am currently 8 months pregnant and still to this day have had NO heartburn. Up until I became pregnant, I had no issues maintaining my weight loss. Now I am gaining for the baby, but mine has been totally within normal range and I am confident I will be able to lose it once baby arrives. Any further questions, don't hesitate to reach out! Always happy to discuss VSG! :)

Yes, Dr. Genaw is another surgeon who works alongside Dr. Carlin, and from my understanding, he and Dr. Carlin are both very equal and competent when it comes to performing this surgery. I chose Dr. Carlin just by chance, so I cannot speak on Dr. Genaw's personality. I just know that Dr. Carlin had excellent bedside manner and he was very encouraging throughout the entire process. So I would imagine Dr. Genaw would be similar.

My starting weight was 311 lbs and I got down to 165 lbs which I easily maintained for 2.5 years. I'm hoping once I have my baby I can get back to that weight. But being three years post-op, my stomach is still pretty tight and I can only eat small portions of food; so this tells me that Dr. Carlin performed the surgery very well!

But as I tell everyone, this surgery is no easy way out. People do have complications (albeit rare), and not everyone sees awesome results. I feel like my success was a result of me researching for almost a year, understanding what was expected of me, and also a result of having such a great surgeon. I knew that I still had to put in the work in order for this procedure to be a success.

I personally know people who have had this surgery and thought they would just lose weight and they could continue to eat the foods they ate prior. Sadly, these people have regained quite a bit, if not all of their weight back and are very unhappy. No matter what your age, you have to go into this with an open mind and be willing to change everything about your lifestyle; the way you eat and the way you live.

Do you have a surgery date yet? Or are you still waiting on insurance approval?

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
