Stall from the start- theories on "starvation mode"?

Recommended Posts

After my pre-op diet of low carb low calorie, I lost 10 pounds (yay!)...then came th clear fluids, mostly consisting of Gatorade, and the 10 pounds just stayed there...

Fast forward: I'm 7 days post-surgery, still living on basically Gatorade and broth, and still no weight loss (this is 10 days of staying at this weight).

So I switched it up, no more Gatorade, did pure vegetable (no sugars) juice instead, skim milk (I'm allowed now), and the only sugar I get is in my chewable Vitamin.< /p>

I'm still at this stall....

One theory my friend proposed is that the extreme low calorie, all sugar diet of Gatorade sent my metabolism into "starvation mode", and it was keeping the weight on due to the sugar. Thoughts?

I know that there a lot of people that stall right in the beginning, what do you guys think?

I'm just 3 days in to my no sugar liquid adjustment, and we shall see how it goes- still at a stall 3 days in. :/

I agree with your friend. My doctor told me NO GATORADE, because of the sugar content. Are you getting in enough Protein and Water everyday? I am finding it difficult to get all my water in. I am not one to sip on fluids all day.

My dr has a strict "clears the first week" rule, and says not to worry about Protein until day10 (tomorrow for me! I've never been so excited to have a Protein shake ;))

I suspect it may be the sugar. I've managed to get 40 oz of Water a day (not quite enough!) I imagine some of the skim milk and veggie juice is helping too.

It could also just be the shock to your system. I lost almost nothing until three weeks post op. The stress of the surgery, the IV, the long flight...all of it added up to an actual GAIN despite the fact that I followed doctor's orders to the letter.

It's been a while since you posted. How's it going now?

I'd be reluctant to start playing the add-this, subtract-that game this early out. You're absolutely going to lose weight post op, so there's no need to worry about tinkering with the system as you're healing!

And I think starvation mode is pretty controversial here, but you can search for topics on it. I'm in the group that feels that one study was blown way out of proportion and is used by doctors to apply a "one-size-fits-all" diet band-aid to every overweight person they see. After metabolic testing it was proven to me that on 1200 calories a day I can expect to lose just over a pound a month. Not exactly the results I'd want after throwing away 85% of my stomach, right?

Anyway, I hope you're doing better now. It's been another week and your weight loss should be picking up steam by now.

Good luck,

~Cheri

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
