Recommended Posts

I am 4 weeks out from surgery. Im supposed to be able to eat meat as long as I blend it or if I chew it to death. When I eat meat I throw it right back up. I dont know how to get my protien in eating mushy food . any advise? also I switched to the over the counter Vitamins because the chewable one was making me sick. Do I take two of those a day or one. I cant remember what the nut said. I also started the B12. It just seems like Im not eating enough to not ruin my health.Today I had a protien shake in the morning so I can take my pills with it. For lunch I had 3 small chunks of lobster meat and a sting cheese. for supper I threw everything up I tried to eat so drank a protien shake again.Does this sound normal? plus drink Water in between meals and dont get enough of that in either .

throwing up isn't normal, IMO. Are you trying to eat red meat? Some folks have a hard time with that for awhile. I haven't tried steak yet, just chicken, pork and seafood.

Are you sure you're chewing enough? If it's not totally mushy, like applesauce, it could be that the meat isn't fitting into your sleeve.

Are you sure you're ready for the meat you're eating? If something is too spicy, Rex (my sleeve) lets me know quick that he doesn't like it. For me, spicy can be defined as too much pepper on something.

Also, I'm lactose intolerant these days. Are you putting cheese or sour cream on the meat or in your meal? If so, your body could be rejecting the dairy product and not the meat.

Maybe give yourself a few days, then try meat again. My surgeon's guide says that anytime we throw up, it's time to regress a stage for a few days. If waiting a few days doesn't make it easier to keep meat down, then a call to the doctor might be in order. Since you can eat seafood, maybe you should stick to that for a bit until your sleeve gets a little more healed?

Good luck on your journey!! :)

I was released last week to go ahead with a normal diet with the exception of hard nuts (almonds and pistachios were mentioned) and hard tortilla type foods. I still have not tried steak or pork because I am too chicken :biggrinjester: (pun intended). I have had ground beef and pork sausage with the casing removed. You have the rest of your life to eat these things so take it slow. Seafood seems to have a lot of good Protein so if you like it (and can afford it), I would stick with that and only try to incorporate one new thing every few days. If you don't tolerate it, then don't eat it again for a few weeks then try again.

If you don't like seafood ... Hmmm. I got nothin'.... Maybe chicken, eggs, cheeses (if you are not lactose intollerant), Protein shakes (they get boring), or whatever else you can think of.

I took a jar of baby food meat, added some salt pepper and garlic powder, dipped a saltine in it and ate that for some Protein. I also had to make sure my meat was very moist at first. Mixed tuna or canned chicken with mayo leaving in the liquid from the can, then put in my little electric chopper. Same with ground beef, added a little canned beef broth and ketchup, chopped fine. I couldn't eat steak or pork chops until much later. I had problem with meat getting stuck at first too. I also depended on shakes a lot. I am almost a year out and can eat anything (almost) with no problems. I still have to be careful taking big bites, not chewing enough or eating too fast.

I am 6 weeks out and cannot eat meat. To be blunt, it's not really throwing up but regurgitating. My sleeve just doesn't have room for more than 3 or 4 bites of soft food. Cottage cheese with fruit is great. But, I know I'm not ready for chicken or beef. Dr. says if you can't keep it down, wait a few days and maybe try again. Take very small bites. I use only small salad plates and a small fork to remind me. I have had to train myself to take a bite, wait 5 min. and take another bite. Takes a long time to eat but your stomach will be full before your brain is full. Eating slowly helps your brain catch up. Hope this helps.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
